Garage Hub Encourages Youth to Learn More About Downtown Mexicali

Taking advantage of the talent students have so that they know more about the history of Mexicali, an event was organized to promote the culture and history of the city.

The Garage Project Hub is the innovation department of the Educational Group “September 16”; dedicated to teaching children, youth, and teachers about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics through workshops, courses, classes, competitions and events.

The “Build Your Downtown” project is an event for the creation and programming of video games through the Minecraft Education Edition platform at the municipal level in Mexicali, where children and young people competed to become champions of the contest, promoting talent in the field of STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and EE-Sports (Educational Electronic – Sports).

Educational electronic sports are an activity in which video game users interact and compete with each other in a professional or amateur way, through educational platforms. Where gamers in addition to having fun, apply STEM knowledge and skills.

The objective was to build and program the historic downtown of Mexicali, replicating exteriors and interiors of downtown icons, both ancient and current.

Adding in turn, the personal touch of each team and complementing with ideas of a future center, using their creativity, construction skills and logical programming thinking.  Thus strengthening teamwork, science, technology, history and culture, to bring children and young people closer to these important spaces of society, through a fun and educational environment such as video games, and preserve the essence of the city increasing the sense of belonging.

In this first e-sports competition, children and young people from 10 to 18 years of age participated, forming teams and developing construction and programming strategies to become the champions of the event.

The teams built different icons in the city center, such as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, La Pagoda China, Plaza del Mariachi, Parque Héroes de Chapultepec, La Chinesca, La Casa de la Cultura, Hotel del Norte and many more, but in the end, only 3 teams managed to be victorious:

  • 1st. place: Mexicali Masters
  • 2nd. place: Gatete Team
  • 3rd. location: The Epic Builders

 And honorable mentions for excellent design and programming:

  • BC Builders
  • Team Alpha Panthers Wonder Dynamite
