Art Basel 2024 Edition to Illuminate Basel with Expanded City-wide Program

-Editorial

This year’s Art Basel, set to take place from June 13 to 16, with previews on June 11 and 12 at Messe Basel, promises a grand display of artistic innovation across the city. The 2024 edition, in partnership with UBS, is set to feature 286 premier galleries from around the globe, introducing 22 first-timers alongside seasoned exhibitors from Europe and beyond.

The fair will broaden its reach with significant expansions in several sectors. The Unlimited sector, curated for the fourth time by Giovanni Carmine, showcases 70 large-scale installations by both celebrated and emerging artists. Meanwhile, Kabinett returns to spotlight 21 carefully curated projects within the primary exhibition spaces of participating galleries. A highlight of the city-wide program is the Messeplatz project where Agnes Denes unveils her land art installation “Honouring Wheatfield – A Confrontation (2024)”, curated by Samuel Leuenberger. This installation not only reflects Denes’ profound environmental engagement but also marks the continuation of Art Basel’s discourse on the interaction between art and nature.

Parcours: Art in Everyday Spaces. For the first time under the curation of Stefanie Hessler, the Parcours sector will transform Clarastrasse, leading up to the Middle Bridge. This sector will turn everyday venues along the route into canvases for artistic expression, exploring themes of circulation and transformation. The evening of June 12 will see Parcours Night, offering live performances and extended viewing hours.

Conversations and Film: Engaging Dialogues and Cinematic Delights. The Conversations series, celebrating its 20th anniversary and curated by Kimberly Bradley, will stage over 11 panels with more than 25 influencers in the art world. This program will delve into contemporary cultural issues and the evolving dynamics of the art market. Additionally, the Film program, curated by Filipa Ramos and entering its 25th year, will present a rich tapestry of artists’ films, focusing on topics like ecology and history.

The program includes a special segment for young audiences, making it a family-friendly event. Unlimited and Kabinett: A Closer Look at Featured WorksAmong the anticipated showcases in Unlimited are site-specific installations like Anna Uddenberg’s “Premium Economy” and a reenactment of Faith Ringgold’s “The Wake and Resurrection of the Bicentennial Negro”. The Kabinett sector will feature, among others, an intriguing installation of Keith Haring’s mural segments. Merian and Messeplatz: Cultural BeaconsThe Merian will become a hub of continuous artistic and community engagement, situated ideally at the Middle Bridge. It will host an installation by Petrit Halilaj on its façade and offer nightly curated programs.

Messeplatz will display Denes’ transformative piece throughout the summer, complemented by a rich program that explores the profound connections between art, environment, and urban space.

Art Basel continues to innovate and expand, the 2024 edition promises to be a pivotal event in shaping the future landscape of global contemporary art.
