High School Sports Suspended This Fall in Imperial Valley

-Editorial

It will be a different kind of year for many students as they will be starting school online this fall forcing them to adapt to a new reality.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all California counties that are in the State’s monitoring list to begin school distance learning this fall.

The Imperial County Officer of Education and the Public Health Department confirmed that all schools in Imperial Valley will be online only this fall.

Schools can reopen for in-person education when its county has been off the Monitoring List for 14 consecutive days. Schools that don’t meet this requirement must begin the school year with distance learning. The youngest students in kindergarten through 2d grade, who are being taught in classrooms, would be encouraged, but not required, to wear masks.

The recurring question is if there would be high school sports starting this fall. In the weekly press conference by the Imperial County Health Department, County Health Officer Dr. Stephen Munday said that school sports will not be allowed until the state released guidance.

“Athletics will not be allowed until the state releases guidance on school sports. We will have to wait and see what they say but in the meantime, there won’t be any this fall,” Munday said.

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) announced that education-based athletics for the 2020-2021 school year will begin with a modified season of sport schedule. The schedule of training camps will be moved to November and December with the possibility that sports can resume in the spring.

“We are continuously monitoring the directives and guidelines released from the Governor’s Office, the California Department of Education, the California Department of Public Health, and local county health departments and agencies as these directives and guidelines are followed by our member schools/school districts with student health and safety at the forefront. As these guidelines change, CIF Sections may allow for athletic activity to potentially resume under the summer period rules of the local Section,” the CIF said in a press release.
