By: Mario Conde

The Heffernan Memorial District inaugurated the second Wellness Park in Calexico at Kennedy Gardens Park.

In an effort to increase wellness and good health among residents, the Heffernan Memorial Healthcare District held a ceremony to open their second wellness park in the city.

Three other parks in Calexico will soon be equipped with exercising equipment as part of an effort to promote health and wellness in the city.

City of Calexico, Imperial County and State officials gathered on Friday, June 30th, to celebrate this achievement.

Heffernan Board Chair Sylvia Bernal said this equipment can be used by anyone regardless of their physical limitations.

“This equipment is not only geared to youth and seniors, but also a handicapped person can come up here with a wheelchair and do the exercise here.” Bernal said.

Bernal said that people can see how their taxes are being used by Heffernan Memorial. The money used to purchase the equipment was used from the sales tax that expired in 2007.

“There are seniors that can’t afford to go to the gym or pay for it so what better to come to the park, meet your friends, and at the same time exercise.” she said.

Additional wellness equipment will be installed at Crummett, Nosotros and Cordova parks, with fifteen modules purchased by the Heffernan Memorial Healthcare District.
