Less than a month to start the Fiestas del sol 2019, the most representative celebration of Mexicali has already a new queen. This is Melissa Castañeda, 21, who was crowned on Wednesday night, September 4, by the Director of DIF Mexicali, Margarita Flores de Sánchez, and also by her husband, the City Mayor Gustavo Sánchez Vázquez.
There were 8 participants who appeared on the gala catwalk, mounted in Bar 52, where each one of them, in addition to posing before the eyes of the audience, answered a series of questions referring to the role of women in society, as well as cultural aspects of Mexicali, and historical data of the Cachanilla festival, which has been celebrated since 1975.
After an elimination, 4 finalists were chosen, who wore ball gowns of different styles, before the jury composed of a dressmaker, a photographer, and a nutritionist, who cast their vote, to finally deliver the verdict that would define the winner.
Thereafter, Melissa Castañeda, 21, was declared the winner of the beauty contest, receiving the crown from Brianda Magaña, the 2018 edition winner. In addition, she received a 10,000 pesos’ cash prize, and a trip to Puerto Vallarta with all expenses included.
The new queen will be ready to parade at the fair inauguration, and from October 2 will be present to participate in the 44th edition of the Fiestas del Sol, which, the mayor declared, seeks to be the best in its history.
