San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria launched Comic-Con International 2024 at the San Diego Convention Center, emphasizing the convention’s substantial economic impact. Since its inception in 1970, Comic-Con has become a pop-culture landmark, running from July 25 to July 28, with a preview night on July 24.

“Comic-Con is an iconic event that brings people from all over the world to San Diego for four days of unforgettable fun,” said Mayor Gloria. “It not only celebrates creativity and innovation in popular arts but also significantly benefits our local businesses and the City’s budget through hotel room taxes.”

Expected to draw over 135,000 attendees, Comic-Con 2024 is projected to generate a regional impact exceeding $160 million, including direct and indirect visitor spending. Attendees alone are anticipated to spend $96.5 million directly, benefiting hotels, restaurants, attractions, and numerous local services. The event will also contribute approximately $3.2 million in taxes to San Diego.

As the largest comic book and popular art convention globally, Comic-Con features over 460,000 square feet of exhibit space and more than 1,000 exhibitors. The event also offers over 2,000 hours of programming covering various aspects of popular culture.

“San Diego is the Comic-Con Capitol of the world,” said Assemblymember Tasha Boerner. “It supports small businesses, creates jobs, and injects millions into our local economy.”

Councilmember Stephen Whitburn praised the event’s contribution to local businesses, noting, “Downtown serves as a perfect backdrop for fans to experience our city’s offerings.”

This year’s notable guests include Will Ferrell, Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Coolidge, and Hugh Jackman. Major exhibitors include Marvel, Lionsgate, and Lucasfilm.

Rip Rippetoe, President and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center, highlighted the event’s significance: “Comic-Con is more than an event; it’s a tradition, an economic engine, and a community.”

David Glanzer, Chief Communications & Strategy Officer of the San Diego Comic Convention, expressed excitement for the event, noting, “This year is shaping up to be one to remember.”

The free Comic-Con App, available on the App Store and Google Play, offers live updates, a complete program schedule, and interactive maps.

Julie Coker, President and CEO of the San Diego Tourism Authority, emphasized Comic-Con’s impact on tourism and local businesses: “The convention transforms San Diego into the epicenter of popular arts and culture.”

To ensure safety, the San Diego Police and Fire-Rescue Departments have increased resources and will oversee operations during the event. Temporary Harbor Drive closures from July 24 to 28 will facilitate a pedestrian-only space around the Convention Center. Attendees are advised to use public transportation or ride-sharing services to avoid delays.
