City of El Centro Council Awards Construction Project for New Police Headquarters, Fulfilling Measure P Promise

-Editorial

The City of El Centro Council unanimously voted to award Barnhart-Reese the construction project of the new Police Department Headquarters during a Council meeting Tuesday.

“We are excited to get this project started and start the process of constructing a new police building for our city,” said City of El Centro Mayor Martha Cardenas-Singh. “One of the promises Council made when Measure P was passed was to construct a new police department, and on Tuesday, we took another step toward fulfilling that promise.”

The project consists of the phased demolition of the existing police station building to allow the construction of two buildings totaling 44,477 square feet. The main building is a 32,671-square-foot two-story building. It will include a public lobby, a community meeting/multipurpose space, offices for administration, investigators, records, and patrol-related functions, including lockers, fitness, report writing areas, etc. The second building is a support building of 11,806 square feet. The ground floor will house property and evidence, k-9, the fingerprint laboratory, and various police support and storage functions. The upper floor is proposed to accommodate an indoor police firearms range, depending on the overall cost of the project.

The project is expected to begin in late November and complete in the first quarter of 2026. The total cost of the project will be $49,763,516, including the $39,764,499 construction contract just awarded. The project is funded through Measure P funds and supplemented by Impact fees and Asset forfeiture funds. In November of 2016, El Centro residents approved Measure P.  This measure increased the sales tax rate by ½ of 1% effective April 1, 2017.  The purpose of the tax is to address major capital needs within the City.

The City of El Centro and the Police Department will have a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Police Headquarters at the existing Police Department, 150 N. 11th Street, in El Centro on Monday, November 13, 2023, at 9 a.m. The groundbreaking is open to the public.
