IID celebrates Public Power

The Imperial Irrigation District, in October, joined more than 2,000 community-powered, not-for-profit electric utilities across the nation in celebrating the benefits of public power.

Public power is distinctly different from the investor-owned utility sector. Public power utilities are fully accountable to their customers, owned by the community, and governed locally. The district takes pride in serving its customers with an important and essential need, said Marilyn del Bosque Gilbert, IID’s energy manager,

“We’ve certainly seen our share of challenges this year,” she said, “but we continue to pull together with a common goal: keeping the IID service area powered. We’ve proven that, despite the challenges, we power on.”

IID places reliability and service as its foremost priority and will continue to work to bring low-cost, safe, reliable electricity to community homes and businesses.

The district encourages customers to enjoy the advantages of being a public power customer in a variety of new and beneficial ways:

  • Visit iid.myenergyxpert.comto conduct a free, do-it-yourself energy assessment. Customers can determine how their homes are using energy and identify ways to improve overall performance. Users are alerted to incentives for energy efficiency measures, appliances, and equipment that are available.
  • Visit evolve.iid.com to learn about electric vehicles and chargers that are currently on the market. EVolve also provides information about public charging locations and incentives that will help customers with the purchase of an electric vehicle or charging equipment.

Today, IID’s Energy Department serves its 157,000 residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial accounts in the Imperial and Coachella Valleys.
