To keep children and young people in Baja California away from crime and addiction, Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, alongside Miguel Torruco Garza, National Director of Sports, Arts, and Well-being Promotion at the Ministry of Public Education (SEP), led the “Boxing for Peace” physical activation event with the participation of students and athletes.
The governor stated that the event served as a preparatory training session for elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as young athletes, who will take part in the National Boxing Class scheduled to take place simultaneously across the country on April 6.
“Together, we will build peace in Baja California. That is why today we are officially joining President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to be part of this great National Boxing Class,” Ávila Olmeda said.
She highlighted that Baja California has a strong boxing tradition, having produced some of Mexico’s most renowned fighters, including Erik “El Terrible” Morales, Jaime Munguía, and Julio César Chávez. Given this legacy, the National Boxing Class is expected to have a positive impact on the state.
“We are joining this great class because a child with boxing gloves in their hands is a child who will not have a weapon in their hands. Gloves, yes. Guns, no,” she stated.
For his part, Miguel Torruco Garza emphasized that the Mexican government promotes sports as a tool for shaping and strengthening society from a young age, contributing to the country’s path to peace.
The event was also attended by Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz and members of the city council, who reaffirmed that sports play a key role in building a safer society through youth engagement.
