Claudia Sheinbaum Meets Canadian Ministers to Boost Trade Ties

-Editorial

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, met at Palacio Nacional with members of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet to continue a bilateral understanding agreement aimed at deepening economic and sectoral cooperation, officials from both countries said.

Sheinbaum held talks with Canada’s minister of international trade, Dominic LeBlanc, and minister of agriculture and agri-food, Heath MacDonald. The discussions focused on expanding trade links, strengthening agricultural supply chains, and promoting investment across priority industries.

The meetings coincided with a large Canadian business mission to Mexico involving more than 400 representatives from 246 organizations spanning agribusiness, information and communications technology, clean technology, and creative industries. Mexican officials described the visit as the largest Canadian business delegation to the country in three decades and said it reflects continued interest in bilateral investment opportunities.

Mexico’s foreign relations secretary, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, met Monday with about 380 members of the Canadian delegation. The mission is led by LeBlanc and includes Canada’s ambassador to Mexico, Cameron MacKay. The gathering, convened by the Embassy of Canada in Mexico, also drew Mexican business leaders, including José Medina Mora, president of the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial.

In remarks released by Mexico’s Foreign Ministry, de la Fuente described Mexico as “a reliable partner” and emphasized cooperation between neighboring countries. He said continued collaboration would support economic growth and shared development goals.

Officials said the business delegation’s agenda includes sectoral meetings, networking sessions, and discussions on trade facilitation and regulatory cooperation. Canadian representatives are seeking to expand partnerships in agriculture, digital services, energy transition technologies, and cultural industries, according to organizers.

Additional participants at the meetings included Canada’s minister of identity and Canadian culture, Marc Miller; Mexico’s secretary of agriculture and rural development, Julio Berdegué; labor secretary Marath Bolaños; Mexico’s undersecretary for North America, Roberto Velasco; and Mexico’s ambassador to Canada, Carlos Joaquín.

Mexico and Canada maintain extensive trade ties under regional economic frameworks and bilateral agreements. Officials from both governments said the current meetings are intended to reinforce those links through increased business engagement and coordinated policy dialogue.
