The 2024 edition of the California Mid-Winter Fair officially opened on February 28 with a vibrant ceremony, marking the beginning of Imperial Valley’s most anticipated annual event. Attendees gathered in excitement as the fairgrounds came to life with entertainment, food, and family-friendly activities.
A Patriotic Opening Ceremony
The inauguration began with the Presentation of Colors, setting a solemn yet celebratory tone for the evening. The crowd stood in reverence as El Centro resident Elya Galindo delivered a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, drawing enthusiastic applause from attendees.
By 3 p.m., thousands of fairgoers had streamed through the gates, eager to experience the thrilling rides, diverse food offerings, and lively attractions. Some headed straight for the carnival rides, their laughter echoing through the fairgrounds, while others indulged in classic fair treats such as funnel cakes and corn dogs. The air was electric with excitement, as families and friends embraced the tradition of creating unforgettable memories.
Alan Philips, Chief Executive Officer of the fair, noted that the growing attendance over previous years led organizers to extend the duration of the event.
“We made this decision based on attendance patterns from previous years,” Philips said. “And we are not pioneers in this—other fairs traditionally have longer runs.”
A Celebration of Military Service
The first day of the fair was designated Military Appreciation Day, offering free admission to all veterans and active-duty military members, along with one guest. The tribute aimed to recognize and honor the service of the men and women in uniform.
“This is our passion—helping veterans reach their full potential,” said Agustin Saldana, a retired U.S. Navy veteran who served for 20 years. “I’m retired and also a 100% disabled veteran. We’re here to push information and let veterans know they’re appreciated for their time and service. Less than 1% of the population serves in the military, and we need people to step up. We’re only as strong as our defense.”
Saldana also explained that veterans attending Military Appreciation Day at the fair received two free tickets. “The Veteran Service Office allows us to borrow materials, and as members of the VFW and American Legion, we volunteer every year to help out.”
