Baja California Launches Tourism Grant Program

-Editorial

The Government of Baja California has announced a new call for proposals aimed at strengthening tourism and promoting sustainable development through direct financial support for community-based initiatives. Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda introduced the program, administered by the state’s Secretariat of Tourism, which will remain open until December 31, 2025, or until funds are exhausted.

The Support Program for Productive and Sustainable Inclusion offers one-time grants in three categories: Inclusion in Tourism, which provides up to 30,000 pesos for inventory, supplies, and tools for artisan projects; Sustainable Growth, offering up to 50,000 pesos for the purchase of equipment, infrastructure improvements, or training; and Destination Improvement, which grants up to 250,000 pesos for signage, equipment, and upgrades to existing tourist sites or routes.

“This program aims to support individuals, groups, and collectives who are transforming their communities through tourism,” said Governor Ávila. “Our goal is to drive local economies with inclusion, competitiveness, and sustainable development in areas with high tourism potential.”

She added that the program responds to challenges identified in the 2022–2027 Sectoral Tourism Plan, including infrastructure gaps and the need for stronger collaboration within the industry to ensure more balanced and inclusive growth.

Secretary of Tourism Miguel Aguíñiga Rodríguez reported that more than 180 tourism projects have been supported during the current administration. Of these, 58% were led by women and 16% were community-based, reflecting inclusive participation.

Examples of supported initiatives include the renovation of storefronts at Plaza Santa Cecilia in Tijuana; the purchase of equipment to improve beach accessibility for people with motor disabilities in Playas de Rosarito; and standardized signage in Tecate’s historic downtown in line with the Pueblos Mágicos branding guidelines.

Tourist signage has also been installed in fishing and Indigenous communities in Ensenada, San Quintín, and San Felipe, helping visitors identify local attractions and opening new opportunities for economic development.
