Provino Announces 3rd Cultural Evening for Day of the Dead

-Editorial

Provino Baja California has unveiled the details for the 3rd Cultural Evening for Día de Muertos, an event celebrating Mexican traditions and the wine culture of the region. Scheduled for Saturday, November 2, the event will take place at Bodegas de Santo Tomás in downtown Ensenada.

The Día de Muertos celebration, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2003, will be honored in northern Mexico through the Cultural Evening. First introduced during the 43rd World Congress of Vine and Wine in 2022, this event aims to strengthen the wine sector’s cultural activities. “We are thrilled to share this event that celebrates the end of the grape harvest and connects viticulture with our roots. We aim to engage the Baja California community through cultural richness, folklore, and, of course, wine,” said Wenceslao Martínez Payán, President of Provino.

The third edition will feature two parts: a “Tarde de Ofrendas” (Afternoon of Altars) open to families, followed by the ticketed “Noche de Catrinas” (Night of Catrinas) for adults. Both events seek to honor traditions, create a festive atmosphere, and foster a connection with the region’s wine culture.

The family-friendly event will take place from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Plaza Santo Tomás, with free admission. The celebration will blend traditional elements with Mexican cuisine and local wines, offering treats such as elotes, churros, tamales, tacos, and Kumiai cuisine. Wine tasting will be available, featuring three wine samples for 120 pesos. Activities will include a catrina parade by students from UNID Ensenada, face painting, and arts workshops for children and teens.

A traditional altar contest will also be held, allowing participants to draw inspiration from any region in Mexico. Prizes will include cash and wine for the top three entries, with registration available at no cost through the event’s online form.

The evening portion, from 7:00 PM to 12:00 AM, will be held inside Bodegas de Santo Tomás and is exclusively for adults, with tickets priced at 850 pesos. The event will showcase 80 Baja California wineries, offering tastings of more than 100 wine labels, accompanied by dishes from 12 Ensenada and Valle de Guadalupe restaurants. Culinary highlights will include mole, sopes, cochinita pibil, and pan de muerto.

Entertainment will take place on two stages, featuring live mariachi, folkloric ballet, theatrical performances, and a catrina parade. The musical lineup includes popular Mexican songs by Carolina Granado, with guitarist Clemente González, and Latin rhythms from the group Son del Puerto. Additionally, a large altar will pay tribute to figures in Baja California’s wine industry, complemented by catrina sculptures from Ensenada’s Cartonería Workshop.

Ticket purchase includes a commemorative wine glass, with tastings available from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, or while supplies last. Tickets can be bought at Provino’s office (Av. 20 de Noviembre #1138-2, Col. Azteca, Ensenada) or online at www.provinobc.mx.

“Events like these not only strengthen cultural identity but also highlight the richness of traditional Mexican cuisine, combined with Baja California wines and the significance of Día de Muertos. This reinforces Mexico’s dual UNESCO recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage,” said José de Jesús Quiñonez, the state’s Undersecretary of Tourism.
