NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge Debuted in El Centro

Editorial

For the first time in history, the NASA International Space Apps Challenge came to El Centro, California, marking a milestone for innovation, creativity, and collaboration in the Imperial Valley. This achievement was made possible thanks to the efforts of Soroptimist International of El Centro, which organized the event.

The global STEM event, held on October 4–5, 2025, at the STEM Building of Central Union High School, connected the local community to the world of space exploration and real-world problem solving.

Twelve teams took part in the global competition, tackling NASA’s open-data challenges in science, technology, and space exploration. The event featured mentors, judges, and volunteers who supported participants of all ages and skill levels. Organizers described the event as a milestone for regional STEM engagement and a celebration of creativity and collaboration in the Imperial Valley.

“NASA Space Apps was built with late nights, uncertain moments, and so much love. We wanted to give the Imperial Valley a chance to be seen—to show the world what lives here—and to open doors so our children can achieve their dreams, especially when they’re too often left out of opportunities that go to bigger cities. When the doors opened, the fear melted into pride. Seeing our kids light up—from El Centro to Mexicali—made every sacrifice worth it. Our border didn’t divide us; it became our bridge,” said Ivonne Sotomayor, President of Soroptimist El Centro.

The event, known as the world’s largest global hackathon, brought together participants of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels to tackle real challenges on Earth and in space using NASA’s open data. No programming experience was required, as skills in design, science, storytelling, art, and creativity were equally encouraged.

In addition, the organization is preparing its annual girls-only STEAM WARS & Beyond: Dream It, Be It Conference on January 24, 2026. The event will provide high school girls with workshops, mentoring, and career exploration in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM).

Participation was free of charge, enabling individuals and teams from across the region to join. Organizers ensured that even those without teams could connect with others during the event, fostering collaboration and new partnerships.

The arrival of Space Apps to El Centro was seen as a unique opportunity to inspire young minds, promote science and technology, and strengthen the region’s connection to the global innovation ecosystem. Participants under 18 took part with parental or guardian consent, and many had already begun forming teams in advance, exploring official NASA challenges ahead of the event.
