Mexico City.— In a significant moment for Mexico’s journalistic community, the Federation of Mexican Journalists’ Associations (FAPERMEX) renewed its National Board of Directors during the XXIII National Congress and the XX General Ordinary Assembly, held November 28, 2025, at the Aula Magna “General Manuel Torres” of the National Academy of History and Geography (ANHG). Journalist Luis Javier Hernández Córdova, a prominent member of the Association of Journalists of Oaxaca, was elected unanimously as the new president for the 2025–2028 term.
The assembly was presided over by outgoing FAPERMEX president Eva Joaquina Guerrero Ríos, who, alongside Teodoro Rentería Arróyave, president of the National College of Licensed Journalists (CONALIPE), led the proceedings and oversaw the presentation of the 2025 Ricardo Flores Magón Mexico Journalism Award.
Attendees included members of the outgoing 2022–2025 board, CONALIPE representatives, and leaders of journalist associations from across the country, all of whom participated in the democratic process after fulfilling the approved agenda.
In his first remarks as president, Hernández Córdova emphasized the responsibility of assuming leadership at a crucial time for Mexico.
“I have full confidence in the principles, ethics, and professionalism of true journalists,” he said. “I am certain they will rise to the historic moment we are living.”
He also committed to continuing the proposals, projects, and initiatives left pending by previous administrations, noting that all ideas emerging from congresses and council sessions “are positive contributions for the betterment of the profession.”
Outgoing president Eva Guerrero presented an overview of her administration’s achievements, including strengthening alliances among over 50 journalist associations throughout Mexico and maintaining international cooperation agreements—among them, the federation’s participation in the Belt and Road International Media Cooperation Forum in China.
As part of a gesture of gratitude, FAPERMEX and CONALIPE presented recognitions to members of the 2022–2025 board for their service and contributions. Among those honored was Ellie Burgueño, who was acknowledged for her work during the previous board and invited once again to serve on the 2025–2028 National Board, this time as Secretary of Social Action, with continued participation in Binational Affairs. Burgueño is a member of the Association of Radio, Press, and Television Journalists of Mexicali, A.C., and leads the Imperial County–Mexicali Press Club, which brings together more than 100 members. She has been an active advocate for cross-border journalistic collaboration and social initiatives within the federation.
“I am honored to continue serving in a role focused on social action and binational engagement,” Burgueño said after the assembly. “Strengthening connections between journalists across regions and borders is essential in today’s media landscape.”
The Electoral Commission—composed of honorary lifetime presidents Teodoro Rentería Arróyave, María Consuelo Eguía Tonella, and Teodoro Raúl Rentería Villa—validated the slate of candidates and supervised the electoral process.
During the same session, the participation of the Club de Periodistas de Playa de Rosarito, Baja California, was ratified, and two new organizations were formally admitted:
- Unión Independiente de la Información Deportiva de Oaxaca
- Unión de Periódicos, Revistas Impresas y Medios Digitales de Chiapas
Their representatives—Gloria Torres, Juan Luis Carreño, and Gustavo Hernández Cancino—took the oath of membership and joined the growing national network of journalist organizations.
The newly installed National Board includes vice presidents for the North, Center, South, and East regions; secretaries overseeing ethics, social security, professional development, culture, women’s representation, external relations, and public relations; as well as commissions on legal affairs, new technologies, and sports journalism.
The Secretary of Social Action, a role now held by Ellie Burgueño, is responsible for coordinating social programs, strengthening inter-association support systems, and advancing initiatives that elevate professional well-being and community engagement within the journalistic sector. Burgueño’s continued participation also reinforces FAPERMEX’s commitment to fostering binational understanding, especially in border regions where journalism plays a unique role in civic life.
As FAPERMEX opens a new chapter under the leadership of Hernández Córdova, the federation faces an evolving media environment shaped by technological change, rising demands for press protection, and growing expectations for ethical, responsible journalism. With more than 50 associations now unified under its structure, the organization continues to serve as one of the nation’s most influential advocates for journalists’ rights, training, and professional growth.
The 2025–2028 National Board begins its term with a renewed commitment to strengthening the journalistic community, defending freedom of expression, and fostering collaboration among journalists across Mexico—and beyond its borders.
