EGOTIST, NEVER A PACIFIST

Timely Commentary Column

Surely our respected readers, radio listeners, television viewers, and internet users who follow these journalistic columns will have already realized, from the title alone, that we are referring to the New York magnate Donald Trump, who was ill-suitedly employed as President of the United States.

He lashes himself, so to speak, because narcissism is such a common and vulgar condition among people of his kind that his verbosity and actions surface without the need for a clever or incisive journalistic interview.

All of this arises in response to his most recent statement that, since he was not awarded the now-discredited Peace Prize, he no longer feels any commitment to the pacification of the world. In other words, his meager contributions were aimed directly at securing the prize, never at the noble global struggle for peace on behalf of all humanity.

I learned of Donald’s stance through El País, which reported that Trump claims he no longer feels obligated to focus “on peace” because Norway did not grant him the Nobel Prize. Indeed, the President of the United States links his intentions to annex Greenland to that decision, responding to a message from the Norwegian prime minister calling for a reduction in tensions.

The article continues: “The reason Donald Trump wants to annex Greenland is… Norway. For not having given the Nobel Peace Prize to the U.S. president. It is not a parody, although it may seem so. It is what he himself states in a message addressed to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, forwarded to numerous European embassies in Washington, in which he warns that, without the award, he no longer feels obliged to seek peace. The text, confirmed by Støre, became public a day before the Republican traveled to the Davos Forum in Switzerland to deliver a speech there on Wednesday.”

Egocentrism, encyclopedias explain, is the attitude of considering oneself the center of everything—exalting one’s own personality and believing that one’s own needs, opinions, and interests are paramount. This mindset leads to a lack of empathy and to interpreting the world from an exclusively personal perspective, often concealing deep insecurities.

Although egocentrism is a normal stage in childhood (a cognitive inability to perceive other perspectives) and in adolescence (the belief that everyone is watching), in adulthood it becomes a sign of immaturity or a defense mechanism that generates suffering and difficulty in interpersonal relationships.

Its defining characteristics include a lack of empathy; an inability to place oneself in another’s position and understand their feelings; an exaggerated sense of personal importance, believing one’s own problems outweigh all others; and a constant need to be the center of attention—talking about oneself excessively and seeking praise or validation as more talented or important than others.

It matters little that the Norwegian government has no involvement in the decisions of the Nobel Committee, an independent body. The committee chose to award last year’s recognition to the Venezuelan appeaser María Corina Machado, leader of a faction opposed to the Bolivarian movement. Trump makes his resentment unmistakably clear at not having obtained the trophy he so desperately covets.

This is the central passage of his epistle—one that lays him bare—addressed to the Norwegian leader: “Dear Jonas: considering that your country decided not to give me the Nobel Prize for having stopped eight wars AND MORE, I no longer feel obliged to think solely about Peace, although that will always be predominant,” writes the President of the United States in a message whose existence was initially revealed by U.S. public television channel PBS. “Now I can think about what is good and appropriate for the United States of America” when making decisions.

Incidentally, there are already voices demanding that the Nobel Council strip the unpatriotic appeaser of the award for its misuse in granting it to Trump—a measure privided in the relevant regulations.

There is no doubt whatsoever: Donald Trump is an EGOTIST, NEVER A PACIFIST.
