Assemblymember Michelle Tejeda Presents First Annual Legislative Report

-Editorial

Baja California Assemblymember Michelle Tejeda presented her first annual activity report on Aug. 22nd, highlighting legislative initiatives, community projects, and her role in advancing social inclusion in the state.

Tejeda, the youngest legislator to preside over the State Congress, underscored measures aimed at protecting vulnerable groups, including children, adolescents, people with disabilities, and senior citizens. Among the reforms she supported were stricter penalties for crimes against these populations, as well as the promotion of inclusive education and training programs for public officials on disability rights.

The assemblymember noted that her tenure marked the first time all legislative sessions included a Sign Language interpreter, a step she described as part of a broader effort to reduce barriers for people with disabilities. She also reported on the first public consultation with disability organizations in the state, which she said established a precedent for greater citizen participation in policymaking.

In addition to legislative work, Tejeda cited community initiatives such as the first Tianguis Violeta, which supported more than 160 women entrepreneurs, and the delivery of two ambulances serving rural areas of Mexicali and the city’s eastern zone. She also mentioned the rehabilitation of public spaces, the organization of over 70 community assemblies, and support for sports and cultural activities in the Mexicali Valley.

Tejeda emphasized coordination with federal and state agencies to address the concerns of farmers and ranchers, particularly in the Mexicali Valley. She also referenced her involvement in legislative approval of national reforms related to the judiciary, public security, energy, and the rights of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities.

Reflecting on her trajectory, Tejeda encouraged greater youth participation in politics, noting her own experience in youth parliaments before entering elected office. She said her work remains guided by a commitment to social justice and close contact with constituents.

“Throughout this year, we have advanced initiatives that respond to the needs of our people,” Tejeda said. “We remain committed to ensuring that public resources are used to improve the quality of life for all residents of Baja California.”

A graduate in Business Administration from the Centro Cultural Universitario de Investigación Forense y Jurídica, she began her career as an administrative assistant at Hospital El Buen Samaritano before entering public service. Tejeda worked as private secretary to the mayor of Mexicali from 2019 to 2021 and later became National Youth Secretary of Morena, the first woman from northern Mexico to hold that position. She also served as alternate federal deputy, state and national counselor of Morena, and state party secretary. Since taking office as a state legislator in 2024, Tejeda has focused on supporting agriculture in the Mexicali Valley, promoting women’s economic empowerment through initiatives such as Tianguis Violeta, and advancing programs on youth, health, and sports.
