To colleague Gustavo Rentería Villa, with presence across all media and social networks, on his 55th anniversary, with a fervent wish for continued success in our difficult profession of journalism.
Donald Trump’s arrogance allows for this and much more, so far sustained by the military power of the United States, which still does not take into account that of other powers, as he opens a new—or perhaps the umpteenth—front, none other than against the Holy Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church and its pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, an American by birth with dual Peruvian nationality.
“I am not afraid of the Trump administration, nor of proclaiming aloud the message of the Gospel, which I believe is what I am here to do, what the Church is here to do,” Leo stated to journalists. “I do not want to get into a debate with Trump,” he emphasized.
“Pope Leo is WEAK on crime and TERRIBLE on foreign policy,” the magnate claimed in a surprising 334-word post on Truth Social on Sunday night, while flying back to Washington, D.C., from Florida.
“I will continue raising my voice against war to promote peace, dialogue, and multilateral relations among states to find fair solutions to problems,” the Pope continued, on board the papal plane heading to Algiers as he began a 10-day tour of four African countries.
“I don’t want a pope who thinks it is okay for Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” the White House occupant continued. “I don’t want a pope who thinks it is terrible that the United States attacked Venezuela, a country that was sending massive amounts of drugs into the United States.”
“There is too much suffering in the world today,” Leo XIV noted, adding, “Too many innocent people are being killed. And I think someone has to raise their voice and say there is a better way.”
In an abuse of extravagant power frenzy, Donald claimed responsibility for Leo XIV’s rise to the papacy, asserting without the slightest embarrassment that “the former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected pope only because I am president,” and he harshly criticized him for meeting last week with David Axelrod, former senior advisor to President Barack Obama.
“Leo should behave like a Pope, use common sense, stop pleasing the radical left, and focus on being a great Pope, not a politician,” the president concluded.
Less than an hour later, Trump posted an AI-generated image depicting himself as Jesus appearing to heal a sick man, surrounded by bald eagles and fighter jets. Continuing his diatribe against the pontiff as his plane landed, he told reporters: “I am not a fan of Pope Leo.”
The president expressed his opinion after Leo stated over the weekend that a “delusion of omnipotence” triggered the war with Iran. Last month, he wrote on X that God “does not hear the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them.”
Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, said he was disappointed by Trump’s comments. “Pope Leo is not his rival, and the Pope is not a politician. He is the Vicar of Christ who speaks from the truth of the Gospel and for the care of souls,” he argued in a statement.
Trump will not escape strong criticism for his remarks and for sharing an AI-generated image of himself as Jesus. All of this began when the Pope said that Trump’s threats last week to annihilate “an entire civilization” in Iran were “truly unacceptable.”
Accordingly, the U.S. president’s sharp attack on the leader of the Catholic Church sparked widespread reaction in his country and around the world, including from some members of his own party.
“Trump’s unhinged and disgusting post attacking Pope Leo XIV will surely help him alienate the more than 50 million Americans who identify as Catholic,” wrote Representative Pramila Jayapal, Democrat of Washington, on X.
“Trump launched a shameful attack against His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in a statement. “People of faith will never worship an aspiring king. We worship an Almighty GOD.”
A NEW AND VERY SERIOUS FRONT OPENS FOR TRUMP, NOW AGAINST CATHOLICISM AND THE POPE.
