The Imperial Irrigation District (IID) has issued a Conserve Alert for Wednesday, July 9, and Thursday, July 10, urging electric customers to voluntarily reduce energy usage in anticipation of a severe heat wave expected to impact the region.
According to the National Weather Service, an Excessive Heat Warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday through 8 p.m. Thursday, with temperatures projected to range between 107 and 119 degrees Fahrenheit across IID’s service areas, including the Imperial and Coachella Valleys.
While IID reports no current shortage in power generation, officials stress that high demand caused by extreme weather can strain the electric grid.
“Although we are not currently experiencing a shortage of power generation resources, we are encouraging our customers to help reduce energy demand during this extreme weather,” said Matt Smelser, IID Energy Manager. “By conserving electricity, we can ease the burden on our infrastructure and help ensure continued reliable service while minimizing the risk of outages.”
The district is asking residents and businesses to take simple steps to reduce electricity use, especially during peak hours from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Recommended actions include delaying the use of major appliances such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, and pool pumps; setting thermostats at 78°F or higher when at home; turning off unnecessary lights; using fans efficiently and only when rooms are occupied; and blocking sunlight with shades, blinds, drapes, or exterior coverings.
