As soccer fans around the world count down to the FIFA World Cup kickoff between Mexico and South Africa on June 11, a different kind of showdown captured the spotlight in Heber on May 29.

It wasn’t a World Cup match, but for one evening, it felt just as important to the local community.

On one side stood United Toyota, the best dealership in Imperial Valley. On the other hand was Heber Soccer Academy, the region’s premier youth soccer program.

It was a friendly exhibition match at Heber Elementary School, drawing players, families, and supporters for an evening centered on sportsmanship and community engagement.

Pascual Gonzalez, representing Heber Soccer Academy, recognized United Toyota General Manager Jorge Clue for the company’s support of the academy through the purchase of equipment and uniforms. Clue was given a plaque as a thank you. A bouquet was also presented to Alexa Fernandez, social media manager at the United Toyota team, in appreciation of her contributions.

Before the game, Clue rallied his team with a lighthearted warning, shouting, “No heart attacks, no injuries, you guys have to work tomorrow,” as players prepared to take the field.

Once play began, the experienced Heber Soccer Academy squad quickly demonstrated its chemistry and skill. The academy surged to a 3-0 lead within the first 15 minutes, putting pressure on the United Toyota team, whose players were making final adjustments as they settled into the game.

Gonzalez said he has spent more than 40 years in the sport, working with players ranging from children as young as 3 years old to veterans up to age 50.

“I’ve been in soccer for 43 years now,” Gonzalez said. “From the under-3 categories all the way to veteran teams. It has been a very long journey with different teams. I have no complaints. I have done very well in every aspect.” He said he has coached teams in national tournaments and championship-level competitions and is currently working with his colleague Diego Lopez, to advance the game of soccer in Heber. Gonzalez thanked United Toyota for its support, saying, “We thank Toyota in advance for all the support they have given us so far, and hopefully, God willing, we will continue moving forward.”

Clue said members of the Heber Soccer Academy approached his office seeking help to provide uniforms and equipment for youth players. “Diego and Pascual came to my office and asked for help,” Clue said. “There are many kids who need uniforms and have asked for our support to buy them. We purchased uniforms and also equipment to help with their program.” He added that the initiative stood out because the coaches volunteer their time. “They don’t get paid; they are doing this with their own time,” Clue said. “Everyone is busy, but they are especially volunteering their time.”

The game ended with a score of 11-3 in favor of Heber Soccer Academy, and after the game, everyone celebrated the game and the fun they had.
