U.S. Consulate Opens EducationUSA Advising Center at UABC Tijuana

-Editorial

The U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana has officially opened a new EducationUSA advising center at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC), Otay Campus. The center is intended to provide students, parents, and educators in Baja California and Baja California Sur with reliable and up-to-date information on studying at accredited higher education institutions in the United States.

The center will offer guidance on the U.S. university application process, standardized testing, financial aid, and student visas. It will also host workshops, university fairs, and pre-departure orientation sessions to assist students throughout their preparation and transition. Officials highlighted that the center aims to enhance educational mobility and strengthen collaboration between higher education institutions on both sides of the border, supporting the development of a skilled workforce aligned with the needs of the binational economy.

U.S. Consul General Christopher Teal emphasized that the center will serve as a bridge connecting U.S. and Mexican institutions, fostering student and faculty exchanges, and promoting the sharing of knowledge to better prepare professionals in the border region. UABC Rector Luis Enrique Palafox Maestre described the center as “a bridge of opportunities” that extends beyond physical space, providing students with access to educational alternatives and career development, potentially benefiting around 200,000 students in Baja California and Baja California Sur.

Silvio Gonzalez, Minister Counselor for Public Diplomacy at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, said the center “is a door to new opportunities” for students and families in northwestern Mexico. Representatives from higher education institutions on both sides of the border, along with private sector leaders, attended the inauguration.

EducationUSA, a network managed by the U.S. Department of State, operates more than 400 advising centers in over 175 countries and territories. The UABC center is one of 16 EducationUSA centers in Mexico, aimed at reinforcing educational and cultural ties across the CaliBaja border region. The center is located at the Otay Community Center on the UABC Tijuana campus, next to the main cafeteria, and will be directed by Valeria Andrea Buelna Sainz.
