Despite ongoing challenges facing the electrical distribution infrastructure, Tijuana remains an attractive destination for industrial park development, as companies and developers have chosen to invest in their own infrastructure projects to ensure a reliable power supply.
That assessment comes from Francisco Nevárez, director of Nezco, a company specializing in electrical infrastructure construction. He explained that in recent years, developers of industrial, commercial, and residential projects have invested resources to strengthen the electrical networks required to support their developments.
“Developers have been building their own infrastructure to meet energy demands, which has allowed projects to continue moving forward and has improved the reliability of the power supply,” he said.
Nevárez noted that, at the same time, Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is working on projects to expand the grid’s capacity, including new transmission lines that will strengthen the electrical system throughout the region.
However, he said that one of the main challenges remains the distribution network, which is responsible for delivering electricity to end users in a city experiencing rapid growth in housing, commerce, and industry.
“From our perspective, the main challenge lies in distribution, because it is what brings energy to where it is truly needed, and keeping pace with Tijuana’s growth remains an ongoing challenge,” he said.
Francisco Nevárez explained that the cost of developing electrical infrastructure varies depending on the characteristics of each project, although he emphasized that these investments have not slowed interest in establishing new industrial complexes in the city.
In closing, he stressed that most recently built industrial plants are equipped with backup systems to handle temporary power interruptions, allowing them to maintain operations while electrical service is restored.
