Sheinbaum Vows to Defend Mexicans’ Dignity Ahead of Trump Meeting at G7

-Editorial

In a moment charged with both diplomatic weight and domestic significance, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum declared that she will stand firm in defense of Mexican nationals during her upcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the G7 Summit in Canada. Speaking at a public event in Tlaxcala on June 15, Sheinbaum assured the Mexican public that her administration will represent the country with dignity, conviction, and a clear demand for mutual respect.

“When the President travels, the people of Mexico travel with her,” Sheinbaum said, addressing a crowd gathered to witness the announcement of new health and infrastructure projects. Her message was aimed not only at Mexicans within national borders but also the more than 38 million Mexican-origin residents living in the United States.

Sheinbaum is set to attend the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17. Although Mexico is not a G7 member, it is participating as a guest nation, alongside Brazil, India, and South Africa, invited by host Prime Minister Mark Carney. The summit marks Sheinbaum’s first high-level international engagement since assuming office earlier this month.

The anticipated bilateral meeting with Trump—who returned to the U.S. presidency earlier this year—comes at a time of renewed tension around immigration policy, border security, and trade cooperation. Sheinbaum stressed that her administration will always seek dialogue and cooperation but will not compromise on the fundamental rights of Mexicans abroad.

“We will go with our principles and convictions, but always through respectful dialogue and in search of agreements for the benefit of our peoples,” she said. While specific agenda items were not revealed, analysts expect immigration enforcement, labor protections for Mexican workers in the U.S., and trade logistics under the USMCA to be front and center in the talks.

While the diplomatic stage draws global attention, Sheinbaum’s domestic efforts in Tlaxcala offered a glimpse into her broader governance priorities. During the visit, she unveiled a package of healthcare and education investments aimed at reducing inequality and improving access to essential services.

Highlights include the upgrade of the IMSS Bienestar General Hospital, a repaired CT scanner, and the expansion of both the Children’s and Women’s Hospitals in Tlaxcala. A new campus of the Universidad Nacional Rosario Castellanos and a branch of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional will further bolster educational access in the region.

Additionally, Sheinbaum announced a vehicular bridge in Chiautempan and a multi-year cleanup of the polluted Atoyac River, with a projected investment of 1.5 billion pesos through 2025.

Federal health officials confirmed that over 1.2 billion pesos have already been invested in strengthening Tlaxcala’s health system. A new initiative called La Clínica es Nuestra, launching June 17, will allow communities to democratically manage funding allocations for their own clinics.

Carlos Torres Rosas, head of Mexico’s Social Welfare Programs, revealed that 850 billion pesos in direct aid are budgeted nationwide for 2025, including 9 billion for Tlaxcala alone—benefiting over 350,000 households. Governor Lorena Cuéllar Cisneros praised the federal government’s support, including 93 million pesos to improve 179 rural clinics.

As President Sheinbaum steps onto the global stage in Canada, her message is clear: Mexico will assert its sovereignty, protect its people, and pursue progress both at home and abroad—with dignity, dialogue, and determination.
