Mexico Reports Over 1,200 Arrests and Nearly 8 Tons of Drugs Seized in Two-Week Period

The Government of Mexico has announced the arrest of 1,233 individuals for high-impact crimes between June 10 and 22, 2025, as part of ongoing national security efforts. According to the Security Cabinet, the operation also resulted in the seizure of 671 firearms, nearly eight tons of drugs, 48 clandestine laboratories and concentration sites, and over 1.8 million liters of fuel.

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo highlighted these figures during her daily morning press briefing, asserting that the National Security Strategy is producing tangible results through its four core pillars: addressing root causes of violence, consolidating the National Guard, strengthening intelligence and investigation efforts, and improving inter-agency coordination.

“We talk about four pillars in the strategy: addressing root causes through the government’s social programs, targeted interventions, consolidation of the National Guard as a public security institution under the Defense Ministry, intelligence and investigation to reduce impunity, and coordination through the National Public Security System,” said President Sheinbaum. “This is an integrated system that reinforces the entire strategy. The results are already evident, and proposed legal reforms will further enhance their impact.”

During the briefing, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection Omar García Harfuch provided a comprehensive update on the latest developments. He credited the collaboration among federal institutions—including the Secretariats of Security, Defense (SEDENA), Navy (SEMAR), the National Guard, and the Attorney General’s Office—for the recent successes.

From the start of President Sheinbaum’s administration on October 1, 2024, to June 22, 2025, authorities have reported a total of 24,652 arrests for high-impact crimes, the seizure of 178 tons of drugs, over 3 million fentanyl pills, 12,736 firearms, and the dismantling of 1,150 laboratories across 21 states.

Additionally, under the Northern Border Operation, 4,619 individuals have been detained, along with the confiscation of 3,863 firearms, more than 600,000 rounds of ammunition, and over 40,000 tons of drugs.

The Sheinbaum administration has signaled that further legal reforms aimed at institutional strengthening will be presented during an extraordinary session of the Mexican Congress. These changes are expected to bolster public safety structures at the federal and state levels.
