IID Contributes $40,000 to Support Safe Summer Water Activities

-Editorial

The Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors approved, during its June 17 meeting, to contribute $40,000 in community support for safe water activities in the Imperial Valley.

The District is pleased to once again have our esteemed Water Safety Campaign reach thousands of schoolchildren this year. We are excited to make this financial contribution to our communities so that we can continue spreading the very important water safety message.

The funds will be shared with 11 local entities to help offset expenses associated with keeping pools open, providing free or discounted swimming lessons, or providing safe water activities for youth and adults, such as water slides.

The funds, included in IID’s  2025 Public Affairs Water Safety budget, will be distributed to the following entities: the cities of Brawley, Calexico, Calipatria, El Centro, Holtville, Imperial, and Westmorland; Heber Public Utility District; Niland Chamber of Commerce; County of Imperial; and the Imperial Valley Desert Museum.

IID has presented its successful water safety campaign to elementary students in the Imperial Valley for 66 years, reinforcing the life-saving message to stay away from canals.

This year, the district’s water mascot, Dippy Duck, celebrates 59 years in existence. Dippy Duck connects with children annually through school presentations and community events.

IID’s Water Safety program began on April 14 this year and ended on June 5; however, during the month of July, IID will continue its efforts by visiting local summer camps and library programs throughout the valley.

IID is proud to provide grant funds for summer water activities in partnership with local cities, special districts, and communities.
