Court Filings Reveal Agents Allegedly Called Immigration Operation Near Newsom Event a ‘Political Stunt’

Newly released federal court filings and internal text messages have prompted renewed criticism from California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who alleges the Trump administration used federal immigration enforcement for political purposes during an August 2025 operation near one of his public events.

The documents, filed as exhibits in federal court, include messages attributed to Homeland Security Investigations personnel describing the operation as “a political agenda” and “a stunt.” According to the filings, agents said they were reassigned from other enforcement activities to participate in an operation near Newsom’s Aug. 14, 2025, press conference.

In a statement released following the filing, Newsom said the documents support his longstanding claim that the operation was politically motivated.

“The federal government should never be used as a weapon against political opponents or their families,” Newsom said. “This is an abuse of power, and every American, regardless of party, should be deeply concerned.”

Among the messages included in the court filings, one employee wrote that Newsom “was holding a press conference,” adding that agents “arrested a couple people outside and just stood around to get media attention” before returning to the federal building.

Other messages state, “They essentially raided the Newsom press conferences,” and, “We got pulled off the Home Depot and car wash to run this stunt.”

Another message says, “We were told to assist with targeted enforcement. That is not targeted enforcement. That was just a political agenda.”

A separate exchange questioned the tactics used during the operation, stating that Border Patrol’s approach “seemed a little intense” and appeared to extend into public spaces in a way that was “less and less targeted.”

The operation occurred during a period of political debate in California over proposed congressional redistricting, which state leaders said was intended to respond to redistricting efforts in Texas.

Newsom’s office said the court filings contradict previous statements by the Trump administration that the immigration enforcement activity was unrelated to the governor’s event. The governor has previously accused the administration of using federal law enforcement agencies to target political opponents and recently sought records from the U.S. Department of Justice related to investigations involving him and members of his family.

The filings also include allegations that some agents exchanged racist remarks, including slurs directed at Latinos and immigrants, and describe what Newsom’s office characterized as an enforcement strategy driven by political objectives rather than targeted public safety efforts.

The Trump administration has maintained that its immigration enforcement operations are focused on removing individuals who pose threats to public safety. The allegations contained in the court filings have not been adjudicated in court, and administration officials have not immediately responded to the specific claims contained in the newly released documents.
