The U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana and CETYS University have inaugurated the CaliBaja Innovation Center, a new technology training facility designed to strengthen workforce development and support innovation in the CaliBaja binational region.

Located on the CETYS University campus in Tijuana, the center will provide technical training, industry-recognized certifications, and professional development opportunities for secondary school students, university students, and working professionals.

Organizers said the center aims to help bridge the gap between academic preparation and industry needs by offering training in high-demand technology fields, practical learning experiences, and connections with global technology companies. Participants will also have access to activities designed to strengthen English-language skills and increase understanding of U.S. culture to support academic and professional engagement in international environments.

The center will operate as a Microsoft-certified training facility, offering courses in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital citizenship, and cloud computing. Qualcomm, a U.S.-based technology company, will support the center during its initial phase of operation.

During the inauguration ceremony, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Douglas Johnson said the center represents an opportunity to strengthen ties between the United States and Mexico while preparing students and professionals for future workforce demands.

Johnson said the facility is the 10th American Space in Mexico and reflects collaboration among the U.S. Embassy, educational institutions, and private-sector partners. He noted that partnerships with companies such as Microsoft and Qualcomm will provide students and entrepreneurs with tools to develop technical skills and promote innovation.

U.S. Consul General in Tijuana Christopher Teal said the center’s programs will focus on inspiring future generations, strengthening STEM education and expanding access to technology training for professionals across multiple industries.

Fernando León García, president of CETYS University System, said the initiative aligns with the university’s mission to develop talent for a region increasingly defined by innovation, technology and international collaboration. He said the center will help connect students with industry leaders and workforce opportunities while enhancing regional competitiveness.

The CaliBaja Innovation Center has organized its programming around three primary audiences.

For middle and high school students, the center will offer robotics programs, STEM-based learning activities and English-language development opportunities. University students will have access to mentorship programs, internship support, EducationUSA advising services and specialized technology training. Young professionals will be able to participate in courses and certifications focused on digital skills, workforce development and professional advancement in technology-related sectors.

In addition, the center plans to host presentations, conferences, and educational activities featuring diplomats, technology professionals, academics, and entrepreneurs. Organizers said participation from organizations such as NASA is expected as part of efforts to connect classroom learning with real-world applications.

The facility joins a global network of nearly 600 American Spaces operating in more than 140 countries and territories under affiliation with the U.S. Department of State. According to organizers, it is the first center of its kind in the Baja California Peninsula and northwestern Mexico.

The project builds on other recent educational initiatives in the region, including the launch of EducationUSA services and the creation of the CaliBaja Higher Education Consortium. Organizers said these efforts share a common goal of strengthening regional talent development, promoting academic excellence, and expanding educational collaboration between Mexico and the United States.
