U.S. Customs and Border Protection is advising travelers to prepare for possible delays at the Calexico West Port of Entry as a major construction project begins later this month.

According to CBP officials, construction at the port of entry is scheduled to begin May 12 and is expected to continue for approximately four months. During the project, crews will install new operational equipment and complete infrastructure improvements intended to enhance processing operations at the border crossing.

The Calexico West Port of Entry is one of the busiest land border crossings in the region, serving thousands of travelers daily between Mexicali and Calexico. While vehicle processing operations will remain open throughout the construction period, officials warned that lane reductions, construction activity, and changes in traffic flow could lead to longer wait times for motorists entering the United States.

CBP stated that travelers using the vehicle lanes at the port should expect delays, particularly during peak travel periods. The agency encouraged members of the public to plan, allow additional travel time, and monitor border wait conditions before arriving at the crossing.

Officials said the infrastructure upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to modernize operations and improve efficiency at ports of entry along the Southwest border. The installation of new equipment is expected to support border security operations while helping facilitate the movement of travelers and commerce.

Travelers may monitor border crossing wait times through CBP’s Border Wait Times system and mobile application, which provides updated information for ports of entry across the United States-Mexico border.

The San Diego Field Office of CBP will also continue providing updates regarding traffic impacts, construction activity, and operational changes related to the project.
