The Mexican Consulate in Calexico inaugurated the 26th annual Binational Health Week on Oct. 2, launching a month of health fairs, screenings, educational workshops, and other services across the Imperial Valley.
The opening ceremony and a community health and resource fair were held at the Mexican Consulate, 408 Heber Ave. in Calexico.
Head Consul Rocío Vázquez Alvarez said the initiative has evolved significantly since its beginnings 26 years ago, expanding from a week of activities into programming that now takes place throughout October with the participation of consulates, government agencies and community organizations.
Vázquez Alvarez said one of the initiative’s central goals is to remind residents that health resources are available regardless of immigration status. She said members of the Hispanic community, including people without regular immigration status, can face barriers to accessing health care, making preventive services and connections to local resources particularly important.
“People need to adopt healthy habits,” Vázquez Alvarez said, emphasizing nutrition, preventive care and regular medical checkups.
She also encouraged residents to take advantage of vaccination opportunities as influenza season approaches, noting that October and November are good times to receive a flu vaccine before colder weather arrives.
Binational Health Week, known in Spanish as Semana Binacional de Salud, brings together Mexico’s consular network in the United States and Canada, community organizations, academic institutions, and other partners. This year’s theme is “Wherever you are, your health unites us.”
Throughout October, participating organizations will provide free health services and information in Spanish regardless of immigration status. The initiative focuses on preventive care, health education, and connecting participants with health care and community resources.
In the Imperial Valley, the Mexican Consulate and its Ventanilla de Salud, or Health Window, are working with Legacy MD Medical Group and about 20 community agencies and organizations.
Services will include vaccinations, health screenings, educational sessions, referrals to clinics and health centers, and assistance with health insurance enrollment.
The Calexico program is part of a broader effort coordinated through Health Windows at Mexico’s 53 consulates in the United States and two locations in Canada, Montreal and Leamington. Hundreds of activities are scheduled throughout October.
Among the month’s events will be the Binational Pink Ribbon Walk on Oct. 19, an activity focused on breast cancer awareness and prevention.
Vázquez Alvarez said participants on the U.S. side will gather at the Mexican Consulate in Calexico at 9 a.m. and walk toward the border wall. A group in Mexicali will hold a corresponding walk on the Mexican side, where the two groups will symbolically come together at the U.S.-Mexico border.
She said the walk will include consular representatives, community partners, breast cancer survivors and other participants.
Vázquez Alvarez described the event as a symbolic demonstration of the shared effort on both sides of the border to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention and connect people with available health resources.
Other activities will include an event for Imperial Valley residents age 60 and older from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sports Pavilion in El Centro and a health and fitness fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 9 at Centinela State Prison.
A session addressing menopause, health changes, and related care will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 14 at the Mexican Consulate. A health and wellness fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the Imperial County Office of Education.
A mental health workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 21 at the consulate.
Two events will take place Oct. 28. A healthy eating workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the consulate, followed by Legacy MD Medical Group’s free Fall Festival and health and wellness fair from 6 to 9 p.m. in El Centro.
The month’s local activities will conclude with an overnight breakfast for agricultural workers from 11 p.m. Oct. 29 to 4 a.m. Oct. 30 at the Mexican Consulate in Calexico.
