U.S. Customs and Border Protection is advising motorists traveling from Mexicali, Baja California, into the United States to expect potential traffic delays at the Calexico West Port of Entry as construction begins Thursday, Nov. 5.
According to CBP, construction crews will begin Thursday afternoon and continue through Friday, Nov. 6, within the border crossing’s vehicle inspection area.
The project will involve concrete placement and site preparation, which could temporarily affect traffic flow through the port of entry.
CBP officials said motorists should anticipate intermittent pauses in both Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection (SENTRI) lanes and regular vehicle inspection lanes throughout the construction period.
Although vehicle processing will continue during the work, temporary interruptions could result in longer wait times for travelers entering Calexico from Mexicali.
Officials are encouraging motorists to exercise caution when approaching the inspection area because construction equipment and personnel will be operating near vehicle lanes.
Travelers are also advised to allow additional time for their border crossings, particularly during periods of increased traffic.
The Calexico West Port of Entry serves as a major crossing point between Imperial County and Mexicali, accommodating daily traffic from commuters, workers, shoppers, and other travelers moving between the two communities.
CBP did not announce a complete closure of the vehicle crossing during the construction period.
Motorists seeking updated information about border crossing conditions can monitor estimated wait times through CBP’s official Border Wait Times website or its mobile application, available for smartphones.
CBP officials emphasized that travelers should remain alert to changing traffic conditions and follow instructions from officers and construction personnel.
