
Mexico Wins 16 Medals on Opening Day of Down Syndrome World Championships in Bulgaria

Mexico opened competition at the 2026 Down Syndrome World Championships with 16 medals, including eight in gymnastics and eight in track and field, during the first day of competition at the international event, which continues through June 20.
The Mexican delegation consists of 21 athletes representing the Mexican Federation of Special Athletes (FEMEDE) in athletics, gymnastics, and table tennis. The team is competing with support from the Mexican Paralympic Committee and the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport.
Mexico’s gymnastics team accounted for eight medals, including five gold, one silver, and two bronze.
In artistic gymnastics, María Bárbara “Bibi” Wetzel Aguilar won gold in the Senior Elite All-Around competition and added a second gold medal in the team event alongside Julieta Main Pino and Flor Ivonne Porras. Helena Cárdenas Valencia captured gold in the Junior Elite All-Around, while María del Mar Rattinger Montemayor earned gold in the Pre-Junior division.
In rhythmic gymnastics, Karime Zoe López Vidaña won gold in the Junior Elite All-Around competition.
Julieta Main Pino earned a silver medal in the Senior Elite All-Around, while María Barrón Vega and Ximena Lorenzana Canul each won bronze medals in the Junior Elite and Senior Elite All-Around events, respectively. Mexico also earned a silver medal in the rhythmic gymnastics team competition through the performances of Ximena Sánchez, Montserrat Canto, and Ximena Lorenzana.
Mexico’s athletics team added eight more medals, including three gold, two silver, and three bronze.
Eloísa Alejandra Mosqueda Dávila won gold in the women’s 800 meters and later helped Mexico secure another gold in the women’s 4×100-meter relay alongside Paola Romero, Rosario Pelayo, and Alejandra Garibay. The men’s 4×100-meter relay team of Alejandro Avilés, Ángel Flores, Antonio Lamas and Diego Torres also captured gold.
Silver medals were won by Juan Daniel Rodríguez Mascorro in the javelin throw and Paola Yaretzi Romero Suárez in the women’s 800 meters.
Mexico’s bronze medalists included Sanjuanita Vargas Garza and Karla Lima Luna in the javelin throw, and Jesús Alejandro Guzmán Paredes in the men’s 800 meters.
The Mexican athletics delegation includes 16 competitors: Marco Antonio Sánchez, Ángel Flores, Rosario Pelayo, Antonio Lamas, Sanjuanita Vargas, Jesús Guzmán, Kevin Palomares, Juan Rodríguez, Gabriel Avilés, Eloísa Mosqueda, Karla Lima, Javier Rubio, Hiram López, Carlos Lezama, Paola Romero, and Alejandra Garibay.
Mexico is also represented in table tennis by Eva Medina, Elías Medina, and Héctor Iván Hernández.
Athletes from multiple countries are participating in the championships, which are being held in Bulgaria through Saturday.
