Emergency crews responded to a vehicle fire at Twin City Seed & Feed near the intersection of First Street and Cesar Chavez Boulevard after flames spread from a vehicle into the business, according to information provided by the Calexico Fire Department.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, limiting damage to the exterior of the building to minor to moderate and to the interior to minor. The two vehicles parked at the location were declared a total loss.

Officials said initial firefighting operations were complicated by heavy traffic in the area due to the nearby Calexico Port of Entry and the discovery of a nonoperational fire hydrant upon arrival.

No injuries were reported. Authorities also confirmed that all animals inside the business, including a cow, were safely rescued.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Imperial County Fire Department, El Centro Fire Department, Holtville Fire Department, Calexico Police Department, Calexico traffic control personnel, Imperial Irrigation District, code enforcement officials, the gas company, and American Medical Response.

The incident also caused significant traffic congestion for several hours along Cesar Chavez Boulevard, delaying access to the port of entry and slowing border crossings into Mexico.
