From Fentanyl to Free Trade: Sheinbaum and Trump Navigate Cooperation Without Compromise

-Editorial

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum held a 15-minute phone conversation Monday with U.S. President Donald Trump in which the two leaders discussed bilateral security cooperation, drug trafficking, trade, investment, and future diplomatic coordination, according to the Mexican government.

In a statement and later remarks at her morning news conference, Sheinbaum described the call as constructive and said it focused on joint security efforts carried out with respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both nations.

Sheinbaum said Trump acknowledged Mexico’s recent actions on security and border enforcement. She cited U.S. Customs and Border Protection data that she said shows a significant reduction in fentanyl seizures along the U.S. side of the border over the past year, as well as a reported decline in fentanyl-related deaths in the United States.

The Mexican president said she outlined her administration’s security strategy, including the dismantling of clandestine drug laboratories, arrests of individuals linked to organized crime, and what she described as a 40% decrease in homicides nationwide. She said both leaders agreed the two countries should continue working together under a framework of cooperation that emphasizes shared but differentiated responsibility and coordination without subordination.

Sheinbaum said Trump offered additional U.S. assistance on security matters, but that she reiterated Mexico’s position that cooperation must respect national sovereignty. She said Trump expressed understanding of that position.

She also announced that bilateral teams from the Mexico-U.S. Security Implementation Group are expected to meet in the United States between Jan. 22 and Jan. 23 to continue discussions on joint security policies.

Beyond security, Sheinbaum said the two leaders discussed the situation in Venezuela and reaffirmed that Mexico’s foreign policy position is grounded in its constitution. She added that Trump and she agreed to schedule another call to address trade and investment issues, as well as topics related to Mexicans living in the United States.

The Mexican government said the call lasted approximately 15 minutes and took place on Monday morning. Sheinbaum was accompanied during the conversation by Foreign Relations Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Security and Citizen Protection Secretary Omar García Harfuch, and Roberto Velasco Álvarez, undersecretary for North America at the Foreign Relations Department.

Sheinbaum, who took office last year, has made public security and relations with the United States central pillars of her administration. Mexico and the United States cooperate on a range of security matters, including drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and organized crime, as well as trade under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
