Networking, Tradition, and National Spotlight: Index Mexicali Golf Tournament Breaks Records Again

-Editorial

Golfers from across Baja California and neighboring regions in the United States arrived before sunrise on November 14 for one of Mexicali’s most anticipated sporting events: the annual golf tournament hosted by Index Mexicali and Imagen Radio Mexicali. By 6 a.m., Club Campestre Mexicali was already buzzing with activity as participants enjoyed breakfast, warmed up on the greens, and prepared their gear for a full day of competition and camaraderie.

The event, recognized as one of Baja California’s most successful tournaments, sells out every year—often weeks in advance. Beyond Borders Gazette participated once again as a proud sponsor, joining the region’s industrial and business leaders who make this tournament a signature event on Mexicali’s calendar.

Index Mexicali President Salvador Maese highlighted the tournament’s growing prestige, noting its expanding national reach and the increasing number of participants who travel from across Mexico and the United States to attend.

“This tournament has become a major reference point here in Mexicali,” Maese told attendees during the opening ceremony. “Index Mexicali celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, and for decades we’ve committed to hosting a tournament at Campestre during this season. It is a tradition that reflects our identity as a manufacturing and business community.”

This year also marked the fourth consecutive collaboration between Index Mexicali and Grupo Imagen, whose participation has helped amplify the event’s reputation far beyond the region. Imagen Radio host Pablo Carrillo was present early in the morning for the shotgun start, greeting players and posing for photos before departing for a prior personal engagement.

“Pablo was with us this morning. He made sure to be here for the start, took pictures with many of you, but had a commitment he could not postpone,” Maese shared. “Still, Pablo Carrillo is always in our hearts.”

Maese emphasized that Grupo Imagen’s involvement has contributed significantly to the tournament’s national visibility. “What happens here at Campestre is being broadcast across the country,” he said. “Pablo and the entire Grupo Imagen team are helping make this tournament a national reference.”

While competition is certainly part of the appeal, Maese underscored that the event’s true value lies in the relationships it fosters. “I know everyone is waiting for the raffle,” he said with a smile, “but the most important part is the networking and camaraderie among all of us. This is a space where the industrial, manufacturing, and business sectors come together not just to play—but to connect.”

The tournament’s increasingly international character has also become one of its defining features. This year’s attendees included players from McAllen, Reynosa, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Ciudad Juárez, El Paso, and Chapala, reinforcing Mexicali’s growing visibility on the national and binational stage.

“We are becoming international,” Maese said. He also expressed gratitude to attendees and offered special recognition to the organizing team. “A big round of applause for Renata and her entire team,” he said. Moments later, he invited the crowd to celebrate with a toast. “I’m thrilled to be here with all of you—to take pictures, to share a tequila. Now, let’s raise a toast.”

Renata Ramírez, director of Index Mexicali, echoed Maese’s enthusiasm and reflected on the evolution of the tournament since the partnership with Grupo Imagen began in 2018.

“Index believed in us from the very beginning,” Ramírez said. “They believed in the formula we proposed, and since our first tournament together, they’ve remained by our side as our naming sponsor.”

Ramírez explained that the tournament has become a defining event for both the local industrial sector and the regional media community. “It’s becoming a classic in Mexicali,” she said. “Our members participate with their teams, donate prizes, and help make the awards ceremony truly special. Beyond the sport, this event brings national communicators to Mexicali and puts our city on the map—not only for golf, but for industry, networking, and the incredible activity generated here.”

The tournament has become so popular that a waiting list forms every year. “We cap participation between 144 and 146 players,” Ramírez noted. “This year we had 144—and it sold out again. It fills us with pride because it means we’re creating an experience people really enjoy.”

After a long and energetic day of play, the event concluded with a dinner in the gardens of Club Campestre, where sponsors raffled prizes and the top-performing golfers of the tournament were recognized. Laughter, conversation, and celebration filled the evening, closing another successful chapter for an event that has become one of the region’s most beloved traditions.
