Mayor Todd Gloria joined local officials at the San Diego Convention Center to officially launch Comic-Con International 2025, emphasizing the event’s economic and cultural significance to the region.
Running July 24–27 with a preview night on July 23, Comic-Con is expected to draw over 135,000 attendees and generate more than $160 million in regional economic impact. Of that total, $96.8 million is expected in direct attendee spending, benefiting hotels, restaurants, transportation providers, and small businesses across San Diego.
“Comic-Con is San Diego’s annual blockbuster – filled with action, imagination, and a massive supporting cast,” said Mayor Gloria. “When out-of-towners dine, shop, and stay in our hotels, San Diegans benefit from better roads, parks, and services. That’s a Hollywood ending for everyone.”
The event will also bring in an estimated $3.2 million in tax revenue to support essential city services. Councilmember Stephen Whitburn, who represents downtown San Diego, called Comic-Con a celebration that puts the city on the global stage and strengthens the local economy.
Held at the San Diego Convention Center since 1991, Comic-Con spans more than 460,000 square feet of exhibit space and hosts over 1,000 exhibitors. Programming includes more than 2,000 hours of panels, workshops, and events featuring top figures from film, television, gaming, publishing, and visual arts.
Rip Rippetoe, president and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center, said the convention remains the city’s largest and most impactful event, also welcoming media from over 20 countries.
David Glanzer, chief communications and strategy officer for Comic-Con, praised the event’s wide appeal: “This weekend in San Diego becomes the focal point for all things artistic and creative.”
To enhance safety, the San Diego Police and Fire-Rescue Departments have increased their presence in and around the Convention Center throughout the weekend.
The full Comic-Con programming schedule is available on the free Comic-Con App, which includes live updates, maps, and guest bios.
Daniel Kuperschmid, CEO of the San Diego Tourism Authority, summed it up: “Comic-Con shows what’s possible when a community comes together. It’s a world-class event that celebrates imagination while driving real impact for San Diego.”
