The Trump administration has released an economic analysis estimating that immigration and social welfare policies associated with the Democratic Socialists of America could cost the federal government as much as $49 trillion over 10 years, as President Donald Trump continues to prioritize border enforcement and deportations.

The report, prepared by the White House Council of Economic Advisers, examines the potential fiscal implications of immigration amnesty, expanded eligibility for federal assistance programs, and other policy changes.

According to the administration, implementing the policies examined could cost more than $350,000 per American household over a decade. The figures represent projections based on the administration’s assumptions rather than expenditures already incurred or legislation enacted by Congress.

The council estimates that the lifetime fiscal cost associated with an immigrant living in the United States without legal authorization is approximately $166,716, producing an aggregate cost of $1.4 trillion to $1.9 trillion.

The administration’s statement did not provide sufficient methodological details to independently evaluate those estimates, including how projected tax contributions and public expenditures were calculated.

The report also projects that expanding federal benefits under a hypothetical immigration amnesty policy could increase annual Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program spending by $3.6 billion to $4.7 billion.

Federal housing assistance could increase by $2.3 billion to $3 billion annually, while Medicaid expenditures could rise by $30 billion to $40 billion.

Combined, those programs could generate between $36 billion and $47 billion in additional annual federal spending, or approximately $361 billion to $475 billion over a decade, according to the council.

The broader $49 trillion estimate includes additional policies associated with the Democratic Socialists of America, although the administration did not provide a detailed breakdown explaining the total.

The organization advocates democratic socialist policies, but its positions do not necessarily represent those of the Democratic Party as a whole.

The economic projections accompany administration statistics highlighting changes in immigration enforcement since Trump returned to office in January 2025.

According to the White House, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has recorded 16 consecutive months without releasing migrants apprehended at the border into the United States.

The administration also reported that southwest border apprehensions in August were 94% below the monthly average recorded during former President Joe Biden’s administration.

Additionally, the White House stated that more than 3 million immigrants without legal status have departed the United States since Trump’s return to office.

The Department of Homeland Security previously estimated that 2.5 million immigrants had departed during an earlier reporting period. The administration did not distinguish how many departures resulted from formal deportations compared with voluntary departures.

The council estimated that maintaining the departure rate through 2029 could reduce annual federal expenditures by $26.7 billion to $33.7 billion.

The administration also reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement expanded its workforce from approximately 10,000 officers and agents to 22,000.

ICE reportedly arrested more than 10,000 gang members and 2,100 individuals classified as known or suspected terrorists during Trump’s second term.

Meanwhile, the White House reported that CBP drug seizures increased 73% through August compared with the corresponding period in fiscal 2024.

The administration cited the Laken Riley Act, signed in January 2025, and additional border security funding as components of its enforcement strategy.
