Imperial Valley College President Named Superintendent/President of MiraCosta College

The Imperial Valley Community College District Board of Trustees announced that Imperial Valley College Superintendent/President Dr. Lennor M. Johnson has been appointed as the next superintendent/president of MiraCosta College following unanimous approval by the MiraCosta Community College District Board of Trustees on June 25. 

Dr. Johnson held its last event, inaugurating the new automobile building, one of the many facility projects that Johnson was able to spearhead and complete to modernize the college.

Johnson will conclude his tenure at Imperial Valley College before assuming his new position on Aug. 1.

The Imperial Valley board recognized Johnson’s leadership during a period marked by institutional growth, expanded academic opportunities, and national recognition. Board President Erik Ortega said Johnson’s commitment to student success helped strengthen the college’s reputation and thanked him for his service to students, employees, and the community.

During Johnson’s tenure, Imperial Valley College received the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, one of the nation’s highest honors for community colleges. The college also expanded academic pathways, strengthened student support services, advanced workforce development initiatives, and increased partnerships with organizations throughout Imperial County and neighboring regions.

Johnson, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, brought more than 28 years of experience in higher education leadership to Imperial Valley College. Throughout his career, he has emphasized expanding educational opportunities for first-generation college students, veterans, foster youth, and justice-impacted individuals.

In a statement, Johnson said serving as superintendent/president of Imperial Valley College had been one of the greatest privileges of his career and thanked students, faculty, classified professionals, administrators, trustees, and community partners for their support. He said the college’s accomplishments reflected a shared commitment to student success and that he would always value his time at the institution.

The Imperial Valley Community College District Board of Trustees said it is preparing for the leadership transition and plans to convene a special meeting in the coming weeks to appoint an interim superintendent/president. The interim appointment is intended to provide continuity while the college continues advancing its strategic priorities and ongoing initiatives.

Ortega said leadership transitions are a normal part of an institution’s development and expressed confidence that Imperial Valley College will continue building on its recent achievements. He credited the college’s faculty, classified professionals, administrators, and shared governance leaders for maintaining a strong focus on student success.

Reflecting on his tenure, Johnson said the relationships he developed and the lives transformed through education would remain among the most meaningful experiences of his career. He also expressed confidence that Imperial Valley College is well-positioned for continued success as it enters its next chapter.

The Board reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the college’s mission and ensuring a smooth transition while continuing to serve students and the Imperial Valley community.
