Hotel occupancy in Playas de Rosarito increased significantly compared with the previous year during the Holy Week 2026 holiday period, posting an average gain of approximately 14 percentage points from Thursday through Sunday, according to local hotel industry representatives.
César Rivera González, president of the Asociación Mexicana de Hoteles y Moteles in Rosarito, said data collected from a sample of monitored hotels by tourism authorities and industry groups showed steady increases across the four days.
Occupancy reached 68% on Holy Thursday, up from 51% recorded for the same day in 2025. On Good Friday, hotel occupancy climbed to 84%, compared with 79% a year earlier. The upward trend continued into Holy Saturday, when occupancy peaked at 94%, reflecting one of the strongest days of the holiday period. Easter Sunday closed at 50%, representing a two-percentage-point increase compared with the same day last year.
Rivera González said the results reflect a continued recovery and strengthening of the local tourism sector, supported by coordinated efforts between hotel operators and public agencies. He cited joint promotional campaigns targeting regional and national markets, particularly visitors from Southern California, as a key driver of increased demand.
He added that collaboration with tourism authorities, including the Comité de Turismo y Convenciones de Playas de Rosarito and the Secretaría de Turismo de Baja California, has helped sustain a positive trend so far this year.
Beyond overall occupancy gains, Rivera González noted a shift in visitor behavior, with longer stays becoming more common. He pointed to a noticeable increase in Thursday occupancy as an indicator that more travelers are extending their visits, rather than concentrating arrivals on peak days. That trend, he said, benefits the broader local economy by increasing spending in restaurants, retail establishments, and other tourism-related services.
Favorable weather conditions also contributed to boosting visitation. The region experienced mostly sunny days and warm temperatures during the holiday period, creating ideal conditions for beach tourism and outdoor activities.
Rivera González said Playas de Rosarito continues to strengthen its position as a diversified destination, offering more than traditional beach experiences. He highlighted attractions such as rural tourism, nature-based activities, ranch visits, hiking and cycling routes, as well as adventure tourism options. The area’s culinary offerings, including its well-known Puerto Nuevo lobster and broader regional gastronomy, remain a central draw for visitors.
Rivera González encouraged residents of Baja California and Southern California to monitor ongoing hotel promotions and upcoming events in the coastal city, expressing optimism that the positive momentum will continue into the tourism season.
