Communities throughout the Imperial Valley will celebrate Mexican Independence Day in September with a series of public events featuring live music, mariachi, folklórico dancing, food, and family activities.

The celebrations are scheduled in the weeks surrounding Sept. 16, Mexico’s Independence Day, and will include events in El Centro, Brawley, and at Imperial Valley Mall.

The City of El Centro will host its Viva la Fiesta! celebration from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at Bucklin Park. The event is being presented by the city in collaboration with the Consulate of Mexico in Calexico.

According to the city press release, the event will feature live music, ballet folklórico performances, food vendors, a children’s zone, and activities for families.

Viva la Fiesta! is intended to provide an opportunity for residents to celebrate Mexican culture and traditions through music, dance, food, and other community activities. The city is inviting residents from El Centro and throughout the Imperial Valley to attend.

The city is also accepting participation from food vendors, local businesses, and community organizations. Those interested in participating can register through the City of El Centro’s vendor application process or contact the Parks and Recreation Office at (760) 337-4555 for information about requirements.

In Brawley, the Hidalgo Society is scheduled to host a Día del Grito celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13.

The event will include live music, mariachi, folklórico dancers, food, and activities for families.

The Hidalgo Society, established in 1902, is organizing the event in connection with the local celebration of Mexican Independence Day. The Consulate of Mexico in Calexico is also listed as participating in the celebration.

At Imperial Valley Mall, the mall and the Consulate of Mexico in Calexico will host a Día del Grito: Fiesta Mexicana from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. The event will be free to the public, with access through the food court entrance.

The celebration will feature food vendors, Mariachi Aurora de Calexico, and Sunshine Folkloric. Organizers have also scheduled a traditional ceremony of El Grito, the annual commemoration of Mexico’s call for independence.

The Brawley Chamber of Commerce will present a beer garden during the event. Musical entertainment will include La Cachimba, which is scheduled to perform a tribute to Los Ángeles Azules.

The events are part of annual celebrations held in communities across the United States and Mexico in recognition of Mexican Independence Day.

Mexican Independence Day is observed each year on Sept. 16. The holiday commemorates the beginning of Mexico’s struggle for independence from Spanish rule in 1810.

The traditional Grito de Dolores, or Cry of Dolores, is associated with priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, who called for an uprising against Spanish colonial rule in the early hours of Sept. 16, 1810. The event is commemorated through ceremonies known as the Día del Grito, in which Mexican officials and community leaders traditionally recreate the call for independence.
