The U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, arrived at Naval Air Facility El Centro on Jan. 7 to begin its annual winter training period, launching preparations for the 2026 air show season.
Each year, the Blue Angels relocate to the Imperial Valley during the winter months, using the region’s clear weather, expansive airspace, and military infrastructure to refine their aerial maneuvers, flight formations, and safety procedures. The training period typically includes daily practice flights, maintenance operations, and coordination with air traffic and base personnel.
NAF El Centro serves as a major hub for military aviation training, supporting operational and training squadrons from the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, and allied international partners. Base officials say hosting the Blue Angels aligns with the facility’s mission to support combat readiness and air operations while providing opportunities for community engagement.
The Blue Angels are expected to headline the 2026 NAF El Centro Festival of Flight, scheduled for March 14, 2026. The air show will be open to the public, with gates opening at 8:30 a.m. Organizers anticipate thousands of spectators from across Imperial County and the surrounding region.
Officials said the winter training period at NAF El Centro allows the team to integrate new pilots and support personnel, refine their routines, and prepare for a nationwide performance schedule. Training flights over the Imperial Valley are expected to continue through early March.
The Blue Angels bring national attention to the NAF base and the region’s longstanding role in military aviation. The Festival of Flight provides the public with an opportunity to observe naval aircraft up close and learn about the missions of the armed services.
Security procedures will be in effect for the event. All foreign nationals — defined as non-U.S. citizens or individuals without lawful permanent resident status — will be required to present a valid passport for entry. Paper copies or photos of passports will not be accepted. Base officials said foreign nationals will also undergo biometric enrollment at security screening checkpoints before being allowed onto the installation.
Formed in 1946, the Blue Angels are celebrating their 80th anniversary in 2026. The team was created to raise public interest in naval aviation and boost morale following World War II. Over the decades, the squadron has become one of the most recognized flight demonstration teams in the world, performing precision maneuvers designed to highlight the capabilities of U.S. naval aircraft and the skill of military aviators.
The team consists of 158 active-duty Sailors and Marines who handle flying, maintenance, logistics, public affairs, and support functions. Their performances typically feature high-speed formation flying, solo aircraft maneuvers, and close-proximity aerobatics intended to demonstrate the precision and discipline required in military aviation.
According to Navy officials, the squadron’s mission is to represent the pride and professionalism of the Navy and Marine Corps through flight demonstrations and community outreach. In addition to air shows, the Blue Angels participate in school visits, hospital outreach, and community events throughout their season.
More information about the air show, including parking, prohibited items, and event schedules, is expected to be released closer to the event date.
