The Baja California government announced Oct. 17 that more than 1 million free vaccine doses will be available across the state’s seven municipalities as part of its 2026-27 winter vaccination campaign aimed at reducing respiratory illnesses and related complications.

The campaign, operating under the slogan “En BC, ¡vacúnate!” (“In Baja California, Get Vaccinated!”), will provide immunizations against influenza, COVID-19, and pneumococcal disease through public health facilities statewide.

According to state officials, the initiative prioritizes young children, older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic medical conditions who face a greater risk of developing complications from respiratory infections.

The vaccination effort comes as health authorities prepare for the winter season, when respiratory illnesses typically become more prevalent and colder temperatures can contribute to increased indoor gatherings and transmission.

Baja California Gov. Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda encouraged residents to take advantage of free vaccination services, especially those in higher-risk groups.

The campaign is coordinated by the Baja California Ministry of Health in collaboration with several federal and state health care institutions, including IMSS-Bienestar, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) and ISSSTECALI.

Mexico’s National Defense Ministry (SEDENA) and Navy Ministry (SEMAR) will also participate in the initiative to expand access to vaccinations.

Baja California Health Secretary Dagoberto Valdés Juárez said vaccine eligibility and administration will depend on each individual’s age, medical history, and recommended immunization schedule.

Residents are encouraged to visit their nearest participating medical facility to determine which vaccines they should receive and whether additional doses are recommended.

Valdés Juárez emphasized that vaccination remains an important preventive measure for reducing the likelihood of serious complications associated with respiratory infections, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Health officials said the campaign is intended to improve vaccination coverage throughout Baja California’s seven municipalities, including Mexicali, Tijuana, Ensenada, Tecate, Playas de Rosarito, San Quintín and San Felipe.

Vaccines will be provided free of charge through participating public health institutions, regardless of the specific vaccine recommended for eligible individuals.

In addition to vaccinations offered at medical facilities, state authorities plan to organize mobile vaccination events to reach additional communities and improve access to immunization services.

Information about upcoming vaccination events, participating locations, and schedules will be distributed through the official social media accounts of the Baja California Ministry of Health and the state government.

Health authorities encouraged residents to review their vaccination records and seek guidance from medical personnel before the winter season, particularly those who have not completed their recommended immunization schedules.
