Mexico Expands Support for Repatriated Citizens

Mexico’s “México te abraza” (Mexico Embraces You) program has provided more than 1.567 million services to Mexicans repatriated from the United States since January 2025, including food, transportation, lodging, medical care, documentation and employment assistance, Mexican officials said Friday.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said the federal government has sufficient resources to assist Mexicans returning to the country and help them reach their communities of origin.
She said Sergio Salomón Céspedes, commissioner of Mexico’s National Migration Institute, and Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez would outline the number of Mexicans who have returned and explain how they are received. Sheinbaum said reception facilities are available for those arriving by air or land, where they can receive assistance and help reaching their communities and families.
“There are sufficient resources to attend to our compatriots,” Sheinbaum said.
From Jan. 20, 2025, through Aug. 13, 2026, 271,193 Mexicans were repatriated, according to Sergio Salomón Céspedes, commissioner of Mexico’s National Migration Institute, or INM. Of those, 171,508 entered by land and 99,685 by air on 816 flights through 10 airports.
The program operates in 14 states, providing reception centers for Mexicans arriving from the United States and assistance with transportation to their hometowns, Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez said.
The largest categories of assistance included 453,685 meals, 200,105 transfers to communities of origin, 180,042 Bienestar Paisano cards and 138,669 procedures for CURP identification numbers and birth certificates. Officials also reported 98,698 IMSS enrollments.
Other services included 88,107 lodging services, 69,191 medical consultations, 55,573 Finabien financial cards, 52,197 referrals to federal social programs, and 18,644 employment referrals.
The program also provided 134,371 telephone services, 22,828 DIF services, 33,095 services through the Secretariats of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development and Agriculture and Rural Development, and 10,599 mental health services.
Education assistance accounted for 5,017 procedures, while 3,665 CFE cellphone chips and 2,950 cultural services were provided.
Céspedes said 55% of repatriated Mexicans came from Chiapas, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Michoacán, Puebla and the State of Mexico.
Sheinbaum said reception sites are available for Mexicans arriving by land or air and are intended to provide immediate assistance and facilitate their return to their communities.
