San Diego Leaders Examine Immigration’s Impact on the Region’s Economy and Workforce

San Diego World Affairs Council hosted a panel discussion this weekend examining the economic and social effects of immigration policy on the San Diego region.
The discussion, titled “The Business of Immigration: Ethics, Economics, and the Future of Our Region,” was part of the council’s Engage San Diego series and was presented by OneSD.
Jessica Anderson, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, participated in the panel alongside Alanna Ow of the Burnham Center for Community Advancement. Andrew Blum moderated the discussion.
Panelists examined how immigration policies affect the region’s workforce, business competitiveness and cross-border economy, according to the Chamber.
The event brought together business and community leaders to discuss the regional implications of immigration and the challenges and opportunities facing San Diego’s economy.
The Chamber said it supports discussions that bring together different perspectives on issues affecting the region’s future.
Founded in 1954, the San Diego World Affairs Council is a non-profit, non-partisan educational organization that promotes public understanding of international affairs and foreign policy. As a chapter of the World Affairs Councils of America, the council provides a platform for community discussions on geopolitical, economic, and security issues. Its programming regularly incorporates topics specific to the San Diego region, including U.S.–Mexico cross-border affairs, international trade, and national defense.
Throughout its history, the organization has hosted foreign dignitaries, diplomats, military leaders, and academic specialists for public forums and lectures. In addition to public speaker series, the council engages in educational outreach by sponsoring regional academic competitions for high school students and collaborating with local universities, including UC San Diego, San Diego State University, and the University of San Diego.
