Comic-Con International has found its next superpower: staying in San Diego. A new agreement will keep the world-famous pop culture convention in its longtime home through 2030, extending its commitment to the city by three years and ensuring that fans, creators, artists and iconic heroes and villains will continue transforming downtown San Diego into the epicenter of comics, film, television and gaming for years to come.

Mayor Todd Gloria announced the agreement during the opening of Comic-Con 2026 at the San Diego Convention Center. Representatives from Comic-Con International, the San Diego Convention Center, the San Diego Tourism Authority and regional leaders joined the announcement marking the start of this year’s convention.

Comic-Con, founded in San Diego in 1970, has grown from a gathering of comic book enthusiasts into one of the world’s largest pop culture conventions. The annual event attracts fans, creators, artists, entertainment studios and exhibitors from around the world and has become one of San Diego’s signature tourism and cultural events. Comic-Con had been committed to remaining in San Diego through 2027.

Gloria said the agreement reflects a long-standing partnership between the city and Comic-Con International and ensures the convention will continue to be held in San Diego through the end of the decade.

“Comic-Con belongs in San Diego, and today’s announcement ensures this incredible tradition will continue here through 2030,” said Mayor Todd Gloria. “This agreement is the result of years of partnership and reflects our shared commitment to the fans, creators, businesses and workers who make Comic-Con unlike anything else in the world. We’re proud to welcome everyone back to San Diego for another unforgettable year and excited about the future we’re building together.”

Comic-Con 2026 is expected to attract more than 135,000 attendees during its four-day run, following Preview Night on July 22. The convention is projected to generate more than $160 million in regional economic impact through direct and indirect visitor spending.

More than 61,000 hotel room nights are expected to be booked during the event, with visitors projected to spend more than $95 million at area hotels, restaurants, attractions and other businesses throughout the region. Comic-Con also is projected to generate approximately $3 million in hotel and sales tax revenue for the City of San Diego.

David Glanzer, Comic-Con’s chief communications and strategy officer, said the new agreement was made possible through continued collaboration among the city, the San Diego Tourism Authority and local hotels. He said the agreement includes expanded hotel room blocks at competitive rates intended to accommodate the convention’s large attendance through 2030.

Comic-Con remains the largest comic book and popular arts convention of its kind in the world. The event features more than 460,000 square feet of exhibit space, more than 1,000 exhibitors, and more than 2,000 hours of programming, including panels, workshops, screenings, and special events covering comics, film, television, gaming, publishing, and other creative arts.

Mardeen Mattix, president and chief executive officer of the San Diego Convention Center, said Comic-Con continues to play a significant role in the region’s visitor economy and remains one of the convention center’s premier annual events.

According to the San Diego Convention Center, the facility hosted 92 meetings and conventions during fiscal year 2025, generating a record $1.57 billion in regional economic impact.

“Over the next few days, San Diego will once again find itself at the center of the entertainment and pop culture world,” said Daniel Kuperschmid, President and CEO of the San Diego Tourism Authority. “While attendees come here for Comic-Con, the experience extends far beyond the Convention Center. Fans, creators, studios and media are filling our hotels and restaurants, exploring our arts and cultural institutions and attractions, and taking part in activations and special experiences across the city. That energy creates tremendous exposure for San Diego, and the agreement to keep Comic-Con in our destination through 2030 ensures those benefits for our visitor economy will continue for years to come.”

The City of San Diego said additional police officers and fire-rescue personnel will be assigned throughout Comic-Con weekend to assist with public safety. Deputy Chief Shawn Takeuchi said law enforcement will work with event organizers and public safety partners to manage the large crowds expected downtown.

Harbor Drive, adjacent to the San Diego Convention Center, will be closed from July 22 through July 26 to create a safer pedestrian environment during the convention. The temporary closure is a partnership involving the City of San Diego, the San Diego Convention Center and the Port of San Diego.

Residents and visitors traveling downtown during Comic-Con are encouraged to allow additional travel time and consider using public transportation or rideshare services because of increased traffic and street closures.

Comic-Con 2026 officially begins following Preview Night on July 22 and runs through the weekend at the San Diego Convention Center.
