Art Basel closed its 2026 edition in Hong Kong with strong sales across all market segments, significant international participation, and expanded engagement with the city’s cultural institutions, reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as a central hub for the Asia-Pacific art market.

The fair welcomed 91,500 visitors, including collectors, museum representatives, and cultural leaders from across Asia, Europe, and the United States. Galleries reported sustained activity throughout the week, noting strong demand for both established and emerging Asia-Pacific artists, while international artists continued to attract interest from regional collectors. There was also a notable rise in engagement from younger and first-time buyers entering the market.

Curatorial developments this year reflected a forward-looking approach, with Encounters, curated by Mami Kataoka, alongside Isabella Tam, Alia Swastika, and Hirokazu Tokuyama, presenting site-responsive works aligned with museum and institutional audiences. New sectors Echoes and Zero 10 highlighted digital and mid-market art, allowing collectors to engage with emerging practices in a curated, market-informed context. Zero 10 made its Asia debut following its global launch at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2025.

Institutional participation remained a defining feature, with representatives from more than 170 museums and foundations from 27 countries, including Centre Pompidou, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, M+, SFMOMA, MoMA, Tate, Louvre Abu Dhabi, and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. These institutions attended alongside an active citywide cultural program, including exhibitions at Tai Kwun Contemporary, Videotage, M+, and a first-time collaboration with Hong Kong Ballet. Public programs such as Film, Conversations, and the Exchange Circle offered free access to talks, screenings, and presentations connecting artists, curators, and collectors.

Art Basel executives highlighted the fair’s long-term partnership with Hong Kong’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, signaling ongoing efforts to strengthen the city’s role as a global art hub. The MGM Discoveries Art Prize, now in its second edition, recognized Natsuko Uchino of Galerie Allen for an outstanding presentation in the Discoveries sector for emerging galleries.

Dealers expressed optimism about the fair’s vitality and the growth of Asia-Pacific collectors. David Zwirner, Nick Simunovic of Gagosian, Marc Payot of Hauser & Wirth, and other gallery representatives highlighted both strong sales and new collector engagement across the region. Cross-regional acquisitions and placements underscored the fair’s role in connecting global collectors, institutions, and artists.

Art Basel Hong Kong 2026 took place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center from March 27–29, with preview days on March 25 and 26. The next edition is scheduled for March 25–27, 2027.
