Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the government has invested more than 31 million pesos to strengthen consular services in the United States, assisting 2,334 Mexican nationals in just under three months. The funding comes from the “México con M de Migrante” lottery, held by the National Lottery on September 15, 2025, in recognition of Mexicans living in the United States.

Sheinbaum emphasized that the primary mission of the 53 Mexican consulates in the U.S. is to provide direct support to Mexican nationals rather than focus solely on public relations.

“While consulates may engage in outreach with other diplomatic offices or help Mexicans in specific circumstances, their main responsibility is attending to our fellow citizens abroad,” she said.

The consular network now provides services through both digital platforms and traditional channels. The Mi Consulado website and the Consular Support Hotline allow nationals to access confidential, free services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Secretary of Foreign Affairs Juan Ramón de la Fuente reported that between January 20, 2025, and March 24, 2026, consular officials conducted 12,866 visits to detention centers, averaging roughly 30 visits per day. During the same period, 20,908 legal consultations were provided, and 152,625 cases received assistance or protection during repatriation processes. Additionally, 15 new consulate heads were appointed in the United States.

Roberto Velasco Álvarez, Undersecretary for North America at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the lottery funds have supported legal representation, expanded the program of consular protection visits, organized extraordinary preventive protection efforts, implemented outreach campaigns, and reinforced capacity at high-demand consulates.

Sheinbaum also highlighted ongoing monitoring and quality control measures. “We have implemented anonymous user visits and evaluations to ensure services are delivered effectively and respectfully. Continuous improvements are part of our daily work,” she said. The administration seeks to ensure that Mexican nationals receive timely, reliable, and professional support, particularly in areas of high demand and during critical legal or administrative processes.

The initiative shows Mexico’s commitment to strengthening its consular network and ensuring that its citizens abroad have access to legal, administrative, and humanitarian support, as well as guidance on navigating the challenges of living and working in the United States.
