President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo launched SaberesMX, a free national online platform designed to democratize access to knowledge and provide lifelong learning opportunities across Mexico. The initiative allows students and the general public to enroll in courses offered and certified by public universities and the federal Subsecretariat of Higher Education.
The platform, accessible at saberes.gob.mx, requires users to log in with a Llave MX account, browse the course catalog, and enroll in selected programs. SaberesMX aims to extend educational opportunities beyond traditional university enrollment and provide free official certification for completed courses.
The first course available, SanaMente LibreMente: Jóvenes por la Paz y contra las Adicciones (Healthy Mind, Free Mind: Youth for Peace and Against Addictions), targets 5.5 million students. Developed by more than 70 specialists, the 16-hour course includes interactive activities such as videos, infographics, exercises, case studies, forums, and readings. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate with official recognition. The course focuses on promoting emotional well-being and fostering healthier relationships among young people.
President Sheinbaum emphasized that SaberesMX provides access to microcredentials free of charge, allowing participants to obtain certifications without financial barriers. “Universities and technological institutes traditionally issue degrees, which are indispensable, but now we are expanding access through publicly recognized certifications at no cost,” she said during her morning conference.
Education Secretary Mario Delgado Carrillo described SaberesMX as a tool to make education more flexible and inclusive through technology. He said the platform could potentially reach 10.3 million individuals who have not completed higher education, as well as 183,324 engineers with unfinished degrees, complementing Mexico’s goal of achieving 55% physical coverage in higher education.
Subsecretary of Higher Education Ricardo Villanueva Lomelí said SaberesMX represents a paradigm shift in the country’s higher education system. “This platform positions Mexico at the forefront of global access to knowledge, with no international precedent for a tool of this kind,” he said.
Initial partner universities linked to SaberesMX include the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Open and Distance University of Mexico (UnADM), the National Technological Institute of Mexico (TecNM), the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC), the University of Guadalajara (UdeG), the Benemérita Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP), and Arizona State University (ASU). The platform also collaborates with the Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency (ATDT), @prende.mx, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), and Santander’s Open Academy.
Sheinbaum said SaberesMX aims to complement traditional university programs by offering flexible, publicly recognized courses that can enhance skills and support professional development.
