Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo inaugurated the second section of the Tijuana Elevated Viaduct on Friday, marking the completion of a major infrastructure project aimed at improving traffic flow across the city. The viaduct, which spans 11.4 kilometers in total, is designed to reduce travel time from Tijuana International Airport to the region’s beaches from 34 minutes to 12 minutes.
The construction of the project required an investment of 14 billion pesos (approximately $780 million USD) and created 6,440 direct and indirect jobs, officials said. The viaduct includes a second-level roadway, which city authorities said will help ease congestion on existing routes and improve access to key areas of Tijuana.
Speaking via a live link from the National Palace in Mexico City, Sheinbaum described the completed viaduct as a “major bridge that will provide significant benefits” to the city. She added that the second section of the elevated roadway will enhance the impact of the first phase, improving mobility and supporting economic activity in the region.
The project is part of a broader effort to modernize Tijuana’s transportation network and accommodate the growing number of travelers and commuters. Residents and local business owners have welcomed the improved connectivity, noting shorter travel times and easier access to the city’s beaches, commercial areas, and the airport.
