The City of Yuma has been named a 2025 Great American Defense Community by the Association of Defense Communities (ADC) in partnership with USAA, the program’s official sponsor. Yuma is one of only three communities nationwide to receive this designation, which recognizes exceptional support for military installations and service members.
“The Yuma community strongly supports the U.S. military, our service members, and our veterans,” said Mayor Doug Nicholls. “The Great American Defense Communities designation reflects Yuma’s strong commitment and the true spirit of patriotism that exists here. We are proud to carry the GADC designation.”
Home to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground, the city has fostered a longstanding relationship with the military. Yuma integrates military considerations into its development and infrastructure planning, aligning local growth with national defense priorities.
The recognition also highlights Yuma’s investment in education and workforce development. Several local school districts were among the first in Arizona to receive the Purple Star School designation, which honors schools that provide resources and stability for military families. Programs such as the Dandelion Club and Student Ambassadors offer social-emotional support for military children, while initiatives like SkillBridge, Arizona@Work – Yuma County, and the Veterans Education & Training Services (VETS) Program at Arizona Western College help service members transition into civilian careers.
“We’re excited to welcome Yuma, Arizona, as a 2025 Great American Defense Community,” said ADC President Karen Holt. “Yuma stands out as a leader in supporting military-connected students, offering innovative programs that inspire military communities across the nation.”
The Great American Defense Communities program was established in 2016 to recognize communities that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to improving the quality of life for military personnel and their families.
