U.S. & Mexico Mayors at San Diego Summit Sign Resolution Supporting International Trade

  • Mayors Faulconer, Gastelum Host Mayors From Across The United States And Mexico for Conference on Nafta, Economic Competitiveness & Border Infrastructure

San Diego – Continuing their effort to strengthen binational ties and make the San Diego-Tijuana megaregion one of the most competitive and prosperous areas in the world, San Diego Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer and Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastélum a few days ago convened border mayors from across the United States and Mexico at the 6th annual Binational Summit of the U.S.-Mexico Border Mayors Association to sign a formal resolution pledging support for international trade and the responsible renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

“Border cities must work together and advocate for cooperation among our countries. We are calling on Washington to recognize the importance of trade between the U.S., Mexico and Canada because the jobs of millions of Americans rely on these binational ties,” said Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer. “San Diego and Tijuana have been leading the charge for years, and now border cities from across the U.S. and Mexico are joining us to urge federal authorities to support collaboration across international boundaries for the good of residents on both sides of the border.”

The resolution between the participating mayors codifies their pledge to work together to strengthen economic ties between the United States and Mexico. It specifically calls for embracing a unified approach to border infrastructure and security, continuing efforts to engage and inform federal leaders about the importance of trade, supporting the modernization of certain parts of the NAFTA and embracing technology and other means to secure the border.

The two-day, binational conference – co-hosted by the cities of San Diego and Tijuana – brought together more than a dozen border mayors to collaborate on topics that affect border communities and to foster communication between border regions. Policy priorities included:

  • Promoting cross-border commerce and supporting trade agreements that foster a shared economy between the U.S. and Mexico
  • Enhancing efficient border infrastructure to increase the flow of goods and enhance security
  • Implementing policies that protect the environment, grow the economy and create jobs

Mayors Faulconer and Gastélum have a history of working together to benefit the economic interests of the San Diego-Tijuana megaregion. Earlier this year, they traveled to Mexico City and Washington, D.C., to advocate for policies and initiatives important to the region’s growth and global competitiveness and signed a formal agreement pledging to continue working together for the good of residents on both sides of the border.
